Seattle just handed out another $28 million bailout to affordable housing developers who can’t make their payments. That brings the total to $42 million in two years. Why? Because the policies pushed by the Seattle City Council – and echoed by legislative Democrats in Olympia – are making it harder to provide rental housing, including: ▶️Government rent control. ▶️No accountability when rent isn’t paid. ▶️Rules that make it impossible to manage properties. Small mom and pop housing providers don’t get bailouts. They go bankrupt, lose their properties, and Washington loses more affordable housing in the process. This is not sustainable. The Legislature needs to fix the policies that are causing these problems.

We decided that through a program like rent control, we are able to directly challenge the logic of unfettered profit in the real estate market. We are able to directly challenge housing as a wealth-building tool and, through regulation, strike a blow to the entire real estate industry at once. The beauty of rent stabilization and rent control is that it weakens the speculative value of the real estate asset. The value is no longer based on what the landlord is able to get, but rather it’s based on a state public board deciding how much rent is going up. And yes, that board is controlled by the real estate industry, and yes, there could be a better way to regulate it. American citizens are losing their minds finding out illegals have been getting Section 8 housing while they have to pay full rent “You're telling me with rent being like 50% of the average American's income, they're getting housing assistance, but we have to make full rent and live 3 people to an apartment. But we have to have roommates until our 30s. But these guys are getting housing assistance… Like I genuinely I am at the point where I'm starting to think that if you're an average American citizen, you should automatically qualify for welfare. Not because you don't make enough money, but just because they've given out so much to people who literally aren't supposed to even be here. Anyone who can't see how that's a problem, if nothing else, just because we pay into the system” “How many of these people say they're coming over here seeking asylum, but then they're ungrateful to the country that's willing to save their lives? There's a state program, for example, that says, okay, if you build a building that's over a certain number of units, then you have to change these wage structures and you need to have this percentage affordable and all that, and that cap is about 100 units, 100 apartments. So if you look at all of the 100% of the applications under the new program, to build these buildings in New York, 100% of them are 99 units or below. Until recently, it was illegal for more than 5 people to live together in San Francisco, if they weren't related by blood. You read that right! And while this byzantine law wasn't often enforced, San Franciscans like Josh and Lisa who wanted to set up co-ops and shared housing establishments were choosing not to for fear of non-compliance. That's why we passed the Shared Housing Reform Act earlier this year. So San Franciscans can choose to live with whom they want, where they want, and not fear being afoul of the law. Josh and Lisa have been able able to start work on a shared housing project in the Mission now that the Shared Housing Reform Act has passed. And we're excited to see the residents move in in the years ahead!
