A lesser-known fact about baby polar bears is that they are born with their eyes closed and don’t open them until they are about a month old. At birth, polar bear cubs are tiny—roughly the size of a guinea pig, weighing around 1 to 1.5 pounds (0.5 to 0.7 kg)—and are completely helpless, relying entirely on their mother’s warmth and milk. Their eyes remain shut for the first 4 to 6 weeks, during which time they stay in the den, hidden beneath snowdrifts, developing in near-total darkness. This delayed eye-opening is an adaptation to their harsh Arctic environment, where early exposure to light and cold could be risky, giving them time to grow stronger before facing the outside world.
