Today we're taking a very early look at the progress being made on the Sega Dreamcast's very own port of Runescape Classic! If you weren't already aware of the work that developer, Lobotomy, has been doing, here's some footage captured from an emulator of some online play! It's still extremely early, and as with every ambitious port in the beginning, it still requires the 32MB RAM upgrade, has no audio, and runs like ass... So basically standard procedure! He's currently using our SDL2 back-end with software rendering, which explains the low framerate. Eventually it will move to HW accelerated graphics using the DC's PowerVR GPU, so the current low FPS is to be expected until that time. What IS a big deal is that even in this early stage, it's already able to connect to the online servers for cross-play and is fully playable with the mouse and keyboard! Stay tuned for future updates as Lobotomy continues his work!

Best technology M&A of all time has to be NVIDIA's $6.9 Billion acquisition of Mellanox in 2020. It was a special treat to interview Michael Kagan, CTO of NVIDIA and co-founder/CTO of Mellanox, for today's Training Data episode. Michael has been driving forward the Compute Frontier for more than 40 years now, first as Chief Architect at Intel in the 90s, then Co-Founder and CTO at Mellanox, and for the last 5 years CTO at NVIDIA. There's nobody better positioned than Michael to share the complete history of the compute frontier and what's ahead, from decades pushing forward Moore's law (squeezing more transistors on a chip) to the last decade of work scaling beyond single chip physics limitations (scaling out to 100K+ GPU clusters). Interconnect is the secret sauce enabling compute to scale beyond chip-level Moore's law. Connecting a fabric of 100K+ GPUs to function as a single unit of compute is the enabling technology for today's intelligence explosion. But other things break at the 100K+ GPU cluster scale: individual chips inevitably fail, power and networking become more complex, etc etc. Net effect of scale out: we've inflected the silicon frontier from Moore's Law (2x every 2 years) to Huang's law (~10x a year). The latest MLX has a CUDA back-end! To get started: pip install "mlx[cuda]" With the same codebase you can develop locally, run your model on Apple silicon, or in the cloud on Nvidia GPUs. MLX is designed around Apple silicon - which has a unified memory architecture. It uses the same design with CUDA. So there's no need to move arrays around from CPU memory to GPU memory. Note, this is early days - some operations are missing and performance is still being optimized. But it's already quite fast for Transformer training, text generation, and more! Here's a demo using mlx-lm to generate text with Llama 3 8B (bf16) on an A100:

Enabling autonomous vehicles perceive their environment using only off-the-shelf cameras has been a long term research objective at Swaayatt Robots. This demo highlights the capabilities of our on-road perception system which is able to detect obstacles, road boundaries, lane markers in images, as well as compute depth of the complex scenes in the environment. The output shown in this video is end-to-end raw output from our deep learning system, without any post processing. The current system, with joint computation of obstacles, lane/road boundaries, and depth, works at 30 FPS on an embedded GPU in our autonomous vehicle, and can achieve higher FPS with further optimization -- which is currently a research in progress. This system is being scaled up for both the day and night operations, and we will showcase its strength towards enabling autonomous driving on a mountainous environment with unpaved roads, in the absence of any delimiters. #deeplearning #autonomousdriving #autonomousvehicles #machinelearning

From 2 second (faster on higher end GPUs) Gaussian splat generations, using Apple's "Sharp Monocular View Synthesis in Less Than a Second" code, running locally on my system. Imported into Octane Render 2026 which has fully path traced rendering of Gaussian splats. Stuff like this is why I've been so excited to see where Gaussian splatting research would go. Combined with a real-time Generative AI "renderer" this stuff could start to get quite insane. Combined with Dreams it would be even better ofc :D Code to the Apple code in the comments below.

I got Llama 3 running in my browser using only my GPU with my Wi-Fi switched OFF completely client-side WebGPU is a new feature in browsers where JS can use the GPU of the device and apparently you can run LLMs on it too, and it's fast! My end goal for 🧠 is a locally run client side 100% private conversation where nothing gets sent to, processed in or stored in the cloud This will be helpful because I prefer making it web based instead of coding for 4 different native platforms (iOS, Android, MacOS, Windows) Two challenges still: 1) the user has to download the LLM model first and the smallest model is still ~3GB, but they only have to download it once 2) not all devices have fast GPUs yet for LLMs, but it's starting to become a default in most devices e.g.s smartphones

When I saw that Assassin's Creed Unity was getting a 60 FPS update for current gen consoles, I honestly could not wait to see it with my own eyes. And after playing it, I realized it is not just 60 FPS. The game also seems to be upscaled to 4K, which is absolutely insane in my opinion and the game runs incredibly smooth! Many of you know that I have never been the biggest fan of Unity. But I have to admit, maybe it is just placebo, yet it genuinely feels like the game plays better. Almost like the controller responds more precisely to what I actually want to do. I tested it properly in stealth and of course in parkour, and I have to say, it feels amazing! For PC players this might not be anything special. But for someone like me, mainly playing on console, finally being able to experience Assassin’s Creed Unity at 60 FPS is a game changer. And by the way, co op also seems to be working normally again. This is honestly crazy to see!

The #GTA 3 port to the Sega #Dreamcast has been progressing at an incredible pace. It's been amazing to see the whole DC community come together to tag-team this "impossible" project... Here it is running on a stock DC, no longer requiring the 32MB RAM hardware modification, only a few weeks into development. Since I finally got the time to sit down, build the codebase, and look into some of what I think is the critical path for performance, let's talk about some technical shit, and some of the future steps I think can be taken to further improve performance. First of all, I want everyone to take note that this is NOT a port of the PS2 version. This is a port of the PC version, which has extra content, increased draw distance, improved textures, and other things that have actually increased the challenge here... Whether the DC version will ultimately have these additions or not will remain to be seen, but we're running into plenty of shit that the PS2 didn't have to worry about (like these big-ass PC replay saves won't fit onto a Visual Memory Unit!) Secondly, lets talk about what is and isn't currently optimized, because it's absolutely vital that the DC's hardware is fully utilized here for the sake of performance and achieving a competitive polygon count. Unlike with modern devices, where the whole graphics pipeline is handled by the GPU, both the PS2 and Dreamcast were responsible for transforming and doing lighting calculations for each vertex BEFORE they got submitted to the GPU. The PS2 had a vector coprocessor to do this, while the Dreamcast had a few extremely important SIMD and fast math assembly instructions on its CPU to do these computations. Up until literally just a few hours ago (not shown in this footage), the Dreamcast's SH4 was doing 100% of these operations in slow-ass plain C and C++ code, which is absolutely sub-optimal and is immediately bogging down its CPU with just transforming vertices, bottlenecking the entire graphics pipeline on the fist T&L stage, and also leaving less CPU time for handling other gameplay logic... this is going to absolutely have to be addressed (and already has begun to be). Another issue that is crippling performance here is the fact that the models are all using individual triangles rather than triangle strips, which the Dreamcast's PVR GPU was designed to handle better... Converting these models to use strips rather than individual triangles will result in MANY different gainz for the DC, as you're going from 3N to N+2 vertices per triangle. Converting the models to triangle strips will 1) reduce load times, since model assets will be smaller 2) reduce the amount of video memory required to hold these vertices on the GPU 3) reduce the amount of shit that must be transferred from the CPU to the GPU and 4) give us back a bunch of CPU time, since the SH4 will be less bogged down transforming redundant vertices! The #GTA 3 port to the Sega #Dreamcast has been progressing at an incredible pace. It's been amazing to see the whole DC community come together to tag-team this "impossible" project... Here it is running on a stock DC, no longer requiring the 32MB RAM hardware modification, only a few weeks into development. Since I finally got the time to sit down, build the codebase, and look into some of what I think is the critical path for performance, let's talk about some technical shit, and some of the future steps I think can be taken to further improve performance. First of all, I want everyone to take note that this is NOT a port of the PS2 version. This is a port of the PC version, which has extra content, increased draw distance, improved textures, and other things that have actually increased the challenge here... Whether the DC version will ultimately have these additions or not will remain to be seen, but we're running into plenty of shit that the PS2 didn't have to worry about (like these big-ass PC replay saves won't fit onto a Visual Memory Unit!) Secondly, lets talk about what is and isn't currently optimized, because it's absolutely vital that the DC's hardware is fully utilized here for the sake of performance and achieving a competitive polygon count. Unlike with modern devices, where the whole graphics pipeline is handled by the GPU, both the PS2 and Dreamcast were responsible for transforming and doing lighting calculations for each vertex BEFORE they got submitted to the GPU. The PS2 had a vector coprocessor to do this, while the Dreamcast had a few extremely important SIMD and fast math assembly instructions on its CPU to do these computations. Up until literally just a few hours ago (not shown in this footage), the Dreamcast's SH4 was doing 100% of these operations in slow-ass plain C and C++ code, which is absolutely sub-optimal and is immediately bogging down its CPU with just transforming vertices, bottlenecking the entire graphics pipeline on the fist T&L stage, and also leaving less CPU time for handling other gameplay logic... this is going to absolutely have to be addressed (and already has begun to be). Another issue that is crippling performance here is the fact that the models are all using individual triangles rather than triangle strips, which the Dreamcast's PVR GPU was designed to handle better... Converting these models to use strips rather than individual triangles will result in MANY different gainz for the DC, as you're going from 3N to N+2 vertices per triangle. Converting the models to triangle strips will 1) reduce load times, since model assets will be smaller 2) reduce the amount of video memory required to hold these vertices on the GPU 3) reduce the amount of shit that must be transferred from the CPU to the GPU and 4) give us back a bunch of CPU time, since the SH4 will be less bogged down transforming redundant vertices! Because this has gotten some recent attention again. Apex Legends has bugged FPS ranges, like 140-160FPS for example, where you are severely magnetized to the floor when trying to Slidehop. This Issue has existed for it's entire Lifetime and has been raised to Respawn multiple times. That this still hasn't been addressed in a self proclaimed Movement shooter is completely unbelievable. So i'm once again calling public attention to it in yet another attempt to get this actually looked at. If you regularly reach the following FPS Ranges you HAVE TO Cap your FPS below them to prevent this magnetization issue. - 65-85FPS - 140-160FPS - 205-230FPS - 275-300FPS Even very shallow inclines extend these ranges even further. If you regularly reach FPS in these ranges use the +fps_max command to cap your FPS below one of these ranges. For example “+fps_max 270”. To be safe around inclines set your fps cap 5-10FPS below these ranges. I can guarantee you there will be people under this post utterly flabbergasted that this was the issue all along for why their movement felt so much shittier compared to the smooth movement of the Content creators they watch.

Every day is a fantastic day to be playing Counterstrike... ON THE SEGA DREAMCAST! What you are seeing is a couple minutes of video featuring online play captured directly from the real hardware! This monumental feat of engineering is to be credited to developer, maximqad, who has successfully ported the Xash3D engine, which is Half-Life compatible, to the little white box, with its 200Mhz SH4 CPU and whopping 16MB of system memory. With the engine has come Half-Life, Counterstrike, and the possibility of many others on DC. Unlike the last time you saw these games, though, they're now glitch-free and are fully playable, with plenty of room for further optimizations left! Speaking of gainz, one of the most interesting battle stories from this project has got to be maximqad offloading some of the engine's allocations for its BSP from system memory onto video memory, which the Dreamcast tends to have an abundance of, at 8MB, with support for a fantastic VQ hardware compression format.
