The ejection seats were scrapped in favor of the slidewire and pole bailout system. If the shuttle was forced to make a controlled glide without a runway, astronauts would extend a 2.5-meter carbon-fiber pole from the side hatch. By attaching a lanyard to the pole, they would slide away from the orbiter to clear the left wing before pulling their parachutes.👀
