Slow down, move over and yield for emergency vehicles. Oh, and please, please don't drive drunk. Yesterday afternoon just after 4 p.m., we had a scary moment for two of our officers. They were on their way to another scene at a local middle school where a fight had... occurred, and one student was being threatened with a knife. These are the types of calls that necessitate lights and sirens. We need to get there to keep kids safe. But, our officers didn’t make it because 32-year-old Aurora resident Anthony Robinson got behind the wheel intoxicated and did not yield to our officers. As they were clearing the intersection at South Peoria Street and East Yale Avenue, Robinson T-boned our patrol vehicle, causing it to overturn onto two other vehicles. Robinson initially attempted to flee, but his vehicle wouldn't get him far. We found him less than a block away and took him into custody. Inside his vehicle we found an empty bottle of liquor and drug paraphernalia. We don't share this video for the scare factor; we share this video to remind everyone of how important it is to yield for our patrol vehicles. When you see lights and sirens activated, it's for a good reason. Thankfully, both officers were seen for minor injuries and have since been released from the hospital. Oh and the call they were responding to yesterday? We subsequently located and arrested the teen involved in the fight. Robinson was arrested on probable cause of driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, failure to yield right of way to an emergency vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, and driving without insurance. They crossed under a red without making sure there was no cross traffic. An unmarked vehicle with no visible lights from the side of the vehicle. And the best they can do is blame the cross traffic driver?

Your driver is at fault. They got lucky that they can shift blame to the DUI driver, but emergency vehicle drivers have the responsibility of ensuring that they do not endanger drivers while enjoying the privileges of the cherries and berries.

As a former Fire Chief in Colorado - fully aware of proper emergency vehicle response protocols - and having no information other than what it is on this video, allow me to suggest.....your APD officers were not totally without blame in this unfortunate incident.

I believe the police vehicle is at fault for going through the red light despite their lights and siren were on. It’s their responsibility to check if there are no cross traffic approaching if they are going to go through the red.

Why didn't the cop see the vehicle coming from the lane of traffic he was crossing? He had as much and more obligation to be paying attention, in BOTH directions, as he crossed right-of-way traffic Was this also another drunk Aurora cop?

The white car had the light the police cruiser was in stealth mode, definitely didn’t mimic a Aurora police cruiser, and should’ve crossed the intersection with more caution

We need to quadruple the police force in Aurora I don't know if you guys noticed but our city has grown quite a bit and I don't see any policing of traffic I see people doing whatever they want it's gotten completely out of control

Motorist need to learn how to drive around intoxicated drivers🙄. If they take driving classes on how to avoid those type of drivers, especially the ones that are distracted on their cell phones, there will be less accidents.
