On the 6th day of recruiting myths: Myth #6: “Colleges don’t recruit from high school programs.” It’s true. I’ve never seen a D1 coach at a high school game. Maybe 1-2 make it out to the big well known pre-season tournaments, but in most states, HS ball is in the middle of their own season. So this myth is mostly true if you’re in the D1 or bust mentality. Almost all of us start with that goal, but there are a million things that have to go just right to make that happen. There are plenty of players with enough talent to play D1 that don’t start there. I know this because I played with some amazing ones. They ended up going the JUCO route for one reason or another, killed it as All-Americans, and are now playing at a higher level. I had local JUCO coaches at our HS games all the time. I actually saw them more often in high school than I did at the club tournaments I played in. Even if you think you’re destined for D1, it’s important not to discount it. What happens if you’re injured your sophomore or junior year, or you developed a little too late for D1 programs who have filled their class? What happens if your freshman grades sunk your GPA? What if the programs that offer you don’t have enough athletic aid to make the finances work for your family? To say all recruiting happens in club is more like saying I’m only interested in one path to my goal. And… if you kill it in high school season and get some recognition it can be enough to catch the attention of D1 programs. I had a good friend that nailed it her junior year. She had not received any offers going into May, but her HS season was incredible. She made zero errors all season! Her bat was 🔥 and she ended up getting selected as the Conference Offensive Player of the Year across the state of Arizona. She posted the award on X and immediately she had a D1 coach follow her. That coach eventually came to watch her play in club and have her out for a visit. The award didn’t get her an offer and neither did the high school play directly, but it built enough credibility to get some interest. And for people outside the “recruiting bubble”, these seemingly little things can be the tipping point. She’s a freshman this year playing D1 softball. So… if you’re thinking High School sports don’t provide recruiting opportunities, you’re thinking too narrowly. The opportunity looks different, but it’s still an opportunity to increase your odds of playing at the next level. #RecruitingRules Rule #2: Build your brand. Create your own luck - High school sports provided one of the best opportunities I had to build my brand. Local media coverage. State tournaments and awards. Those are things that don’t happen often in club. The coaches might not be at the field to watch during their own season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep building your brand to improve your opportunities later!

I don’t take for granted how fortunate I am to be offered the opportunity to lead one of these programs, specifically, Houston Christian University (HCU). Let me preface this post with some evidence of the "respect" I have had for the Texas Tech baseball program. That program has always had a "West Texas" wild & craziness/EDGE, that, TBH, I've been jealous of at times. Don't believe those words, see for yourself where at least this 1 person is coming from. I've had the opportunity to interview multiple former Red Raiders who are still playing/pitching professional baseball. Clayton Beeter Ryan Sublette Also, Kyle Robinson is still one of my favorite pitchers I've EVER watched pitch at O'Brate, and I've communicated with him, even since he's been a pro, when he was playing in Tulsa last June with Midland at the AA level. And, Matt Gardner, the former Texas Tech pitching coach, pitched at OSU, and Geoff Haxton, your PxP, grew up in Stillwater, and we are personal friends. So, I respect Tech and enjoy the rivalry. NOW, let's get into the "Nuts & Bolts." There's a difference between playing with an edge and being "dirty". There's a right way to play, and hard slides are a part of it, but that slide was insanely inappropriate, and a VERY bad look all around for an otherwise VERY good player. I honestly didn't have an issue with the chirping, because that, in my view, went two-sided, but the slide was "Busch League". And if you do that in pro ball, completely unprovoked, at least by the player you slid into, you'll only do it once. I'm not telling you anything you don't know because your brother was a pro baseball player, so I'm not reinventing the wheel with that comment. And, YOU played at Blinn, and I KNOW they didn't teach you that, and YOU will, almost assuredly, be a Pro after your time at Tech. I'm about 100% confident in that! That is, unless you don't get THAT act cleaned up. And, maybe the most disappointing part of the whole thing is that the player you slid into is an ELITE human being who has fought through MORE injuries than any College baseball player possibly EVER. And then, you have the piece of it where you actually cost your team, one of the best hitting teams in America, the chance to keep playing and come back to win the game. And, finally, as ANGRY as that play left OSU fans, YOUR OWN teammates, fans & coaches, should have come away from that infinite times more angry than any of us. Maybe the job you are considering is poorly-resourced but it’s also in a weak conference. This is the type of job you should consider taking. The jobs you need to avoid are the worst jobs within the best leagues. You can take and find success in a low-resourced positions if the league is just ok. However, there is minimal pathway to success if you’re in the best league and at an under-resourced school. If you do catch lighting in a bottle, there won’t be sustainability with this set up.

What I do have is … a 6’8 3&D forward. High motor. Unselfish. Excellent touch (38% 3PT, 84% FT). I stopped making highlight tapes and am more focused on Game clips that tell more of the story. This is for real basketball heads with vision and eye for development. But he’s ready to help a program NOW. 19 years old. All conference Potential as a defender. Notice in these clips how discipline he is staying in the ground vs. pump fakes… even with a FORTY-SIX inch vertical. No exaggeration. He is excellent in help rotations. Truly defends 1-5. But isn’t just a dumb athlete jumping all over the place. Gives 100% effort to run back in transition to alter shots. Will be the most athletic player on the team as a freshman. Speed and vertical Is an excellent cutter off the ball. 45 cutter and corner Lob threat. There’s no defense for a paint touch and throwing the ball over the square. If you have good guards he can account for 5 assists a game. His shooting is what’s most impressive to me. Has ability to be 40% 3pt shooter because of great shot selection.. mechanics and touch. Strong rebounder offensively and defensively. Also what makes him special is his ability to Guard other teams scoring point guards. He will win the matchup. Video Gaussian Splats are one of the most wonderful things I've experienced in my last year in tech and XR. They are like having a real person in front of you and have the potential to bring people closer to their idols, or their distant family members, or to store immersive memories forever. Now that I have a Dell Pro Max Tower T2 PC with a powerful #NVIDIA graphics card, I have finally been able to try at home the "memories" offered by Gracia AI, and boy, I was amazed. In the PCVR version, you can really get close to the artists dancing and syncing, and in the frames where the recording doesn't have many artifacts, it is almost like having a real artist in front of you. And it is impressive that this technology works even when the singer is dancing with quick movements! But these recordings can be pretty huge (the one with McKenzi Brooke is 21GB!) and require a powerful computer, so now Gracia is also streaming these GS videos, and I was able to try the Amy May performance also on Quest! I have to say that quality-wise, even streamed, they are amazing. But there are more artifacts than in the PC version: I noticed that when I got close to the singer. But there is a huge advantage in having them on Quest: you can see them in mixed reality. It was like having the singer having a private performance for me in my house. Crazy cool! I'll keep experimenting with these performances and maybe write an article in the upcoming weeks. I VEHEMENTLY disagree with Paul Finebaum’s criticism of Coach Deion Sanders, Sheduer Sanders and Colorado. He called them irrelevant and that they don’t matter to College Football. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Colorado is very relevant and broke TV viewership records last year even after their 3-0 start that saw them finish the year 4-8. They out drew some of the biggest brands in all of College Football last year. Their blowout loss to Oregon had 10.03 million viewers, which topped the Notre Dame-Ohio State game. Shedeur Sanders stated that Colorado is everyone’s Super Bowl game when they play them. HE IS CORRECT, if you take the time to understand what he meant. Every team that played Colorado last year played their hardest against them because they knew everyone was watching and it was their opportunity to shine in front of the masses. It wasn’t JUST ABOUT winning, they wanted to humiliate them and kill their confidence. It pains many that Coach Prime, his sons, Travis Hunter, his coaches and all his players are still walking in their purpose and have never wavered for a second. They know the mission they are on and won’t back down in the face of adversity. Colorado wasn’t an “Easy win” last year for anyone except Oregon and Washington State. 5 of their 8 losses were by one score or less. Colorado making the College Football Playoff AT SOME POINT in Deion Sanders’ tenure would be a great thing for College Football. Not just for the increased viewership, but because taking a program that last won a Conference Championship when Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter weren’t even born yet would be an incredible accomplishment and rebuild. Colorado doesn’t have to go to the College Football Playoff this year and will still be relevant. Teams will be jumping out of their skin to get after them a little extra because they think they are too confident. Coaches will up the passion because they believe they deserve the attention and eyeballs that Coach Prime and Colorado demand. Like Coach Prime said, he is analyzed different and his wins are measured differently. One thing is for sure though. Coach Prime is building something at Colorado and as an analyst, I don’t think we should be trying kick him and his team down because they are confident and believe in themselves.
