"Snooping will never happen with Sanchar Saathi app. Just because an app is on a phone does not mean it will operate automatically. It works only after user registration, and users can delete it if they wish." - Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia

VIDEO | Sanchar Saathi App row: Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said,"First of all, India today, if you take annually last year, 5 million people, that means 50 lakh people, have been impacted because of the cyber fraud. 23,000 crore money has been lost. We get numerous complaints that they have been defrauded. Second, they lost their mobile numbers, mobile phones, and sometimes we get too many complaints saying that multiple phones have been registered on their name without their knowledge. So these are the kind of issues that we receive. Therefore, we did this Sanchar Saathi app, not only in English and Hindi, all vernacular languages, and we have done an extensive awareness campaign. Currently, 1.4 crore people have installed this mobile app. And 21 crore people visit Sanchar Saathi website. So this has been going on for one, one and a half year. It's a quite remarkable program. The way this entire app works is through crowdsourcing. If an intelligent person able to identify that this call is a fraud call, if that person or people like them, 10- 15 people report, then it gets logged in the behind, okay, this phone is at high risk of fraud. This crowdsourcing people involvement is the crucial thing to make this app successful and prevent financial fraud. So therefore, we thought by allowing this app in almost all mobile phones, that information would be a lot more accurate, and we can prevent fraud much quicker." He added, "Therefore, we requested all the original equipment manufacturers. And there has been a working group formed to raise their concerns. And Apple is the only company, as far as I know, did not participate in that working group. But all the rest of them have participated. They asked for whatever the clarifications, and DOT has given. And then the notice was given. But even now, this is just like any other Facebook app, or Google Maps, that kind of app. If you don't want to use it, you can delete it. Unless you have a login and you really register and want to open, then only it will work. Otherwise, it would not have any access. It would not take any of your personal information, your contact information, your email, or anything whatsoever."
