And here I’ve been sitting for the last couple of days trying to find a bug — using every AI available for help. Neither the AI nor my brain has found it yet!

If software engineering becomes obsolete, then who’s building, maintaining, securing, and scaling the very AI you sell? Think before fear-mongering...

Bold claim, but reality is more nuanced. Tools will automate writing code faster. Engineering is still about problem framing, trade-offs, system design, and accountability.

Software engineering will exist. It just won't look like typing code all day anymore.

Once implemented and used for 2 years, firms will realise the cost has increased 10X while the result remains the same, and they will start hiring people again.

He’s saying this for more than a year now. I don’t understand why he’s so eager.

a lot of ppl saying this since years, human intelligence is evloutionary and AI is just programmatic. It can affect till a certain point, but "complete" replacement is a big word

The CEO thinks 1. AI tools are already generating large amounts of code. 2. AI models may soon handle end-to-end coding tasks. 3. Software engineers’ roles could shift to supervising and validating AI. 4. Timeline is speculative; complex engineering tasks remain hard for AI.

That claim feels way too extreme software engineering won’t vanish in 6–12 months. What’s more likely is that AI will reshape workflows, automating repetitive tasks while amplifying human creativity and problem‑solving.

If this statement had been made 5-6 years ago, we probably wouldn’t have connected with it. But today, given the rapid pace of technological advancement, we can easily imagine it happening. The timeline might not be spot on, but the result is inevitable.

Dario Amodei is warning about workflow change, not extinction. Words matter here. Software engineering is already changing fast. But obsolescence is not replacement. Tools get better. Humans shift roles. Code generation speeds up simple tasks. Complex systems still need judgment. Architecture does not design itself. If engineers vanished in twelve months, products would break. Security would fail. Liability would explode. What actually happens is compression. Fewer engineers do more work. Entry-level roles get squeezed first. This is not the end of software engineering. It is the end of how it used to look. Big claims grab attention. Reality moves slower.

The nuance: "Software Engineering" as a role isn't dying, but "Coding" as a manual task is becoming automatable. 2024: AI was an autocomplete tool. 2025: AI became an agentic partner. 2026: AI is handling full-stack, end-to-end repo management. Engineers are moving from "Construction Workers" to "Architects."

Writing code is only one milestone as far as software development lifecycle is concerned. AI will boost the productivity but terming software engineering heading towards obsoletion is an evidence in itself that how little he understood this discipline of engineering.

I think he’s right. The developments in AI are tremendous so software engineering won’t disappear completely but a big chunk of what exists today will definitely get wiped out

I mean, isn’t it the way it’s supposed to be? In order for equal entrepreneurial opportunities for all, this a necessary step. Only the ones who have been through the struggle of setting a perfect website or getting a great app can understand the unwanted pain and expenses we as founders go through. If all this can be solved by an agent or Ai, it really would be a great step ahead. As the founder can focus more on making on the company profitable.
