Nice one. New Zealand celebrates a treaty. Canada celebrates its confederation. USA celebrates its independence. Australia celebrates the arrival of another country's navy. How pathetic.

26th of Jan 1949 is when the Nationality and Citizenship act came into effect (creating Australian citizenship for the first time). It’s when we were first called “Australians” and why we should remain celebrating that day for all the good it embodies.

Under the 1948 Act, First Nations people still couldn’t vote, Australians remained British subjects and British migrants were privileged over every other migrant group in the country in terms of becoming citizens. So I’m not sure I’d describe it as ‘unifying’. 🤷‍♀️
