Some thoughts for conversation. Not arguing with anybody just trying to add a writers perspective.

It’s always interesting to me when people claim the writers “don’t know” the source material and not that they just wanted to do something different. The ring scanning you and still wanting an active verbal confirmation is very interesting and honestly akin to the oath itself.

That is a sharp read. The verbal yes as the oath in miniature. Saving that one.

I agree, the human toll of a human becoming apart of galactic equation, within the context of being earthbound and the people around that person life, is much more interesting story telling for a general audience, and people who never read a green latern comic like myself, which is most of the hbo audience. When you spending money on tv show, and that show primary goal and outcome should be expanding the reach of that source material, then be a good show, the purpose of a tv show is to get the characters more popular and introduce them to wider audience, so it still has to appeal to an hbo audience, not comic books fans only, so a more grounded drama is to be expected and well executed deep dive into characters, that's hbo signature, and i think they are doing a great job

Im noticing alot of these "comic book fans" don't understand nuance,and don't want good story telling. All they seem to want is pew pew bang bang, worship, and BOOM.

I appreciate the conversation. It seems, to me, some people started to watch the show and the second it wasn’t like the comic,they just instantly started to hate watch it. Be patient people and wait out? If anything, just enjoy the ride or stop watching.🤷🏼‍♀️

Also the beginning of any Green Lanterns career starting with a question of if they are afraid subtly builds a denial of fear or obliviousness to fear working through them later on. A good idea story-wise I think especially if they do a Hal-parallax storyline or Sinestro corp

As the great @CosmonautMarcus once said "changes to the source material are fine if they are in service of a better story" which to me is what Lanterns has been putting on a clinic in it. We have to stop asking "is this accurate?" and ask more "how does this improve the story?"⭐

The ring asking “Are you afraid?” isn’t about gathering data. John Sr.'s answer itself reveals character. It might be testing whether he'll admit his fear. Sure, it could silently scan him and flash CANDIDATE REJECTED. Technically efficient. Also shitty television.

They can’t say they don’t know lore because all though it is very hard to tell and i took a picture of my laptop. That is in fact a foam finger of my Redwings and he is from Detroit. That is comic book lore.

Forget the question. The ring wants you to say no - but it also wants you to afraid, but it also wants to know if you have WILL to move past it. That is what it is looking for. The Green Lanterns aren't required to repress fear. Because, no one can, fear is an involuntary response. What is required of a Green Lantern is the will to move past that fear and do whatever is necessary. If fearlessness was a requirement to be a Green Lantern - Jessica Cruz, who suffers through panic attacks ALL THE TIME, wouldn't be a Green Lantern. John was trained to be emotionless, a machine. He was trained to be fearless - which again is impossible, but he is now convinced he is, which he is not, again impossible. And that is like some Manchurian Candidate type of shit. That wasn't a Guardian - that was most likely a Manhunter. This is not going to end how we all think it's going to end.

I think it was because sinestro changed, and they had to go in manually and have people go through tasks in order to make sure the ring can choose someone that is willing to help and show that they are a fit candidate for the job

Very well said, that's exactly how I chose to see it as well. There is no such thing as no fear, fear is a vital survival tool. Bravery in the face of fear is what matters. We have seen that John and Hal has impeccable Will in the face of adversity.

How many lanterns came before Hal? And, NOW the guardians are concerned about how traumatic the “experience” is?
