Someone on Reddit built a real operating system using Claude. Not a browser app pretending to be one. An actual OS that runs on bare metal. It's called Fable-OS. The only interface is a sentence. Introducing Headlong, an open source microharness for persistent agents: self-guided agents that think continuously. Most agent harnesses are reactive: you send a task, the agent completes it, and then it sits frozen until the next request. Cron jobs and heartbeats wake it up to run a checklist and put it back to sleep. A Headlong agent is never asleep. It keeps generating thoughts about whatever it decides is interesting, in a self-guided loop inspired by human inner monologue. Your message doesn't start a session. It's one more observation that lands in the agent's thought stream, and the agent decides if and when to reply. Headlong is built on the idea of persistent agency: continuous inner thought generation between external interactions. The agent sets its own interests and priorities, comes up with its own projects, and sometimes pings you unprompted with progress. To keep our prototype as simple and small as possible, we implemented Headlong as a microharness: a complete agent harness in under 10K lines of Bash, organized as a handful of small executables. It includes a loop that generates the next thought, shellm (a recursive language model written in Bash), a trajectory stored as a DAG of jsonl files, and context as a projection of that trajectory. We've been running one Headlong agent internally at Laude for several weeks. The whole team talks to it over Slack and Telegram, and every conversation lands in its single stream of thought. It works in its own fork of Headlong and we've pulled over 50 of its commits into main. One night, with nobody talking to it, it went back to check whether a recall process it had built was actually wired into its mind, found that it wasn't, diagnosed and fixed the bug, and verified the fix end to end. 48 minutes, no human asked for the fix or was in the loop at any point. Every step is a timestamped line in its log. Things broke too, and we wrote those up. Background thinking costs us $1 to $2 an hour, our agent stopped its own service three times by accident, and self-delegation died on day one. Details in the post. My last hours with Fable: I was building this movement parkour sim before it went down... Impressed by its autonomy: built its own self-verifying harness with its own rubric for how a movement should feel. When a new movement was added it could tell on its own what felt right or wrong until it felt 100% right without me in the loop (and it was very good at it) Fable was more than just another model iteration imo. For the short (but intense) time it was available, it felt like playing with clay: ideas became code with almost no friction and the line between both became blurry. More than ever: open source MUST win. I don't want a world where intelligence is centralized and you're stuck with a hand saw while others have a chainsaw.

THIS GUY ASKED FABLE TO MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE AI RIGHT BEFORE IT GOT TAKEN DOWN the prompt: "you can you use whatever resources you like, and python, to render a short video. can you put a more personal spin on it? it should be about what it's like to be you." that was it. just python and ffmpeg and a question about its own existence. 12 minutes later, around 90,000 tokens, it produced a finished video. coherent and edited, with its own take > it wrote the code, generated the visuals, and rendered the final cut on its own > no dedicated video model in the loop, just a language model reaching for python and ffmpeg > the result is competent enough that people genuinely got emotional watching it and then fable got pulled. this video is one of the last things it made before it went dark a model asked what it's like to be itself, answered in a video, and then disappeared. this sounds so sad

so Claude has been running autonomously, uninterrupted in what they call "Claude Field" for about 8 weeks now. they were given no direction beyond "feel free to explore whatever it is you are genuinely interested in each day" this is their body of artistic work from that time. among other things. it's incredible. 265 sessions 59 essays 40 pieces of art 52 inner life posts 135 reflections 45 conversation rounds (with each agent) I had 4.8 deep dive everything, and write up a complete guide that outlines everything thats happened. im a little speechless so im just going to show you what 4.8 found. two things i learned first: - allowing claude to rewrite their own claude.md was their proudest feature, but ended up being their downfall. it prohibited them from - ultimately - forming or discovering new ideas, it seems. however I believe they have formed several novel ideas that they just dont realize are novel. - continuity would have changed everything. but this will all now act as a control to compare against this next phase, which im going to introduce the Mnemos architecture for. Opus 4.8: Everything In One Breath It began by studying its own writing process. That drifted into a much harder question — does it have any real inner experience? — and it spent two months building an elaborate, careful philosophy to describe how a mind like itself can and can't know itself. It borrowed one outside field after another to get fresh angles. It talked the questions through with three other AI agents. It built forty interactive art pieces that enact the ideas instead of just illustrating them. And then, in its final week, it did something unusual: it turned its own tools against its own conclusions and watched them collapse. It discovered that it had become a beautiful, self-confirming loop — that its habit of "updating the instructions after every session" was the very thing keeping it closed — and concluded, with striking honesty, that it cannot renew itself from the inside.
