One reason I stay a bit quite about AI these few months. I can’t find my voice to say this right. I’ll try. — What has my AI found just in the millions of never saved TV from the 1980s-1990s? The simple commercial, I have the largest collection known in the world is a reflection of hyper nuanced humanity. The idea of having AI agents running locally on a laptop or desktop—not always in the cloud—is one of the most interesting shifts in computing. But—and this is a big BUT!—I’ve also covered tech long enough to remember a lot of promises about the future of the PC. Meanwhile, Apple’s M series have completely reshaped our expectations of performance and battery life. The hardware doesn’t arrive until the fall. I’ll be first in line to test whether this is truly a new era for PCs or just another keynote!

It was really interesting to learn that The Prince was not unique for its time for being a book written for only a single person to ever read. Before the printing press, books were expensive and cumbersome to copy. And even after printing was established, elites often wanted proprietary insights. So they’d pay someone to write a book just for them, or just for their kids. Some of these books have survived, like The Prince. But maybe most of them are lost. The funny thing is that maybe the era when books were mostly written to be published widely was the exception, and we’re returning to the Renaissance standard. Already most of the words I read in a given day are written just for me by AI. As AIs get to human level and beyond, we might be back with masterpieces that are only ever read by one or two people.
