It was really interesting to learn that The Prince was not unique for its time for being a book written for only a single person to ever read. Before the printing press, books were expensive and cumbersome to copy. And even after printing was established, elites often wanted proprietary... insights. So they’d pay someone to write a book just for them, or just for their kids. Some of these books have survived, like The Prince. But maybe most of them are lost. The funny thing is that maybe the era when books were mostly written to be published widely was the exception, and we’re returning to the Renaissance standard. Already most of the words I read in a given day are written just for me by AI. As AIs get to human level and beyond, we might be back with masterpieces that are only ever read by one or two people.show more

I agree with Jay Dyer. Most people simply don't ready anymore. David Wood Dr. David Wood recently admitted that if a book is more than like 200 pages he wouldn't read it. Jay actually asked me for book recommendations prior to our debate and delayed the debate so that he could read a particular book before our debate. Here are some of the books I read in preparation for my debate with Jay. Admittedly, I haven't read every single page of these books. However, I've read many of them cover to cover and key parts in others that were related to our debate.

The invention of the printing press didn't just make information transfer more efficient. It made the whole culture put more weight on the words in front of them. Before the printing press, you might only have had access to a single copy of Aristotle or whoever. This scarcity made ideas slippery. Even if you had evidence that disproved Aristotle, it was easy for someone to argue that Aristotle didn't really mean that - maybe the scribe made a mistake copying the book. But once you had a uniform printed text, with many identical copies, the written word became more load-bearing. When actual evidence conflicted with authority, it wasn't so easy to ignore. Arguably this was a major contributor to the Scientific Revolution. Ideas became more rigid, easier to pin down - and so easier to test and disprove. The broader point is that the shift from oral culture to written culture didn't just happen once. Writing has become more and more load-bearing over time, as technology has changed, and it's hugely changed culture with it. And if writing remains the key component of how AI gets up-to-speed with tasks, then this process could get accelerated.

Google founder Larry Page on how he learned to run a business When asked how he learned to run a business, Google cofounder Larry Page responds: “I read a lot of books.” He joked: “[When renaming Google to Alphabet] I read like three books on naming—which is more than anyone else had read. So I decided I was the expert . . . and actually that was useful. I recommend reading things.” It’s an important mindset that is often overlooked. When I was maybe in middle school, around the seventh grade, the teacher asked us to write a story about love and the vibe was like…umm…it wasn’t a book to an extent, but it was like ten to twenty pages though. Was so hard, really hard.

We have spent a century calling children failures for not fitting a system that was never designed for them. AI is about to expose just how many geniuses we threw away. Jeff Bezos on the insight that started Amazon: In 1994, Bezos came across a statistic that changed his life: worldwide web usage was growing at roughly 2,300% a year. "That was sort of a wakeup call for me that there was something going on," he recalls. At the time, most people hadn't even heard of the web. This was the era of 28 kilobit per second modems and dial-up access. A very different age. But the signal was clear. Something was coming. Jeff Bezos explains the realisation that followed: "I realized you could make a bookstore on the web that could hold more books than a physical bookstore could ever hold. It could truly have universal selection." His background was in computers, not books. He's quick to point out that books weren't chosen out of personal passion: "My real compass, my real passion was computers, and that's how I was involved in this world of the web back in 94. But books was a great first best product to sell online." So why books specifically? Bezos breaks down the logic: "Books were very unique and still are in one respect, and that is that there are more items in the book category than there are items in any other category. There are millions of books active and in print around the world, and the largest physical book superstores only carry about 100, 150,000 of those millions of different books." That gap between what existed and what was accessible was the opening. On the web, you could solve a real problem. He avoids new books and basically doesn't read anything published in the past 50 years. The problem with new books isn't that they're bad. The problem is that everybody else is reading them, which doesn't give you much edge as a writer. Here’s my review after reading the Gospel of Thomas 😊 Background: Gospel of Thomas is one of the books found by farmers in old clay jars in Egypt in 1945. When the ancient Coptic writing style was compared to writing styles over the years, experts determined the book was likely written between the years 100 and 200 CE. Over the centuries, ancient Christians had quoted Gospel of Thomas here and there, but a full copy of the book had been lost until the 1945 discovery. The book is said to have been written by Doubting Thomas, the disciple of Jesus. Of course the copy found in Egypt was likely translated from Thomas’ original writing some years after he wrote it. After reading it myself, I was shocked to find how very many of the sayings are in the Bible. It is a book of parables only, not the full story of Jesus. Some of the parables in Thomas are not in the Bible. I’ve heard from Christians who are scared to read something about Jesus that’s not in the Bible. When I hear that, I always think of the last verse of the Book of John which says: “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.” So John makes clear that Jesus’ whole story is not in the Bible. How delightful, after telling God I’d love to learn more of Jesus’ story, that I come across these sayings.😊🙏🏼 What’s your take?

When I was 8 or 9 years old, I had one teacher who noticed that I really liked history. We didn’t study history at all at the time: this only started in the fourth grade. So my teacher, Yonah, excused me from some of the other classes for an hour or two each week, took me to the school library, and gave me some history books. I would just sit there and read about the Romans and the Chinese and the Mongols and the Inca. It was fascinating. The books I read as a child had a huge impact on who I became as an adult. More recently, when I wrote 'Unstoppable Us', I felt like I was writing it for my younger self. This series has one key message for kids: the world in which we live didn’t have to be the way it is. People made it what it is. And people can change it. Books can transport us to other worlds at all ages, but perhaps even more so in our childhood. What a gift to be able to slow down and enter other, perhaps less noisy worlds once in a while. Happy International Children's Book Day. #InternationalChildrensBookDay #reading

🍒 "I'm detoxing for my dopamine." Dopamine detox by reading. I need to bring my brain back from being addicted to pain and joy. Our brains are in pain these days. (It's been) one day. I need to cut down. I try, but it's hard... I try not to, but I find myself watching short videos. I read some books at the end of December, though—about four books. There's a Korean novel called Rapids. It's a romantic novel, and I really enjoyed reading it. What else did I read? Let's see! Oh, I read a comic book too. There's a comic book called DVD. I think I read it when I was in middle school. Or was it elementary school? Middle school? It was written by the author Chon Kye-young. A scene I like from it! Iga Swiatek after beating Parry to reach Cincinnati QF “Is listening to an audio book considered reading to Iga Swiatek?” Iga: “No. No 😂. Reading is like looking at the letters you know? I’ve honestly never done that for my pleasure. I just used like, not audio book.. but to cheat in school 😂 because there were some books I just couldn’t read you know. I mean, like two of them only. Basically the only books I didn’t finish in my life. So I needed to listen to them. At school you have deadlines. I was busy playing tennis. It saved me quite some time. But that’s the only time I literally listened to an audio book”
