Your peripheral vision is blending the images because you can't pick up the details and your brain fills in the blanks with what it expects to see. Pattern recognition is great. And it can also misfire.

I think its because they are in the peripheral vision. Your brain doesn't pick up the whole picture, but tries to fill in blanks. Add to that survival instinct. When something in the periphery is unknown the brain will scare you into looking. Sort of an alert to make you assess

Guessing facial recognition requires both hemispheres of the brain? Break the data up, it doesn’t compute, and “monstrous” is sort of how we piece together social data which doesn’t compute. Just a thought. I’m sure it is more complicated.
