Something going on with avocados? We’ve had this issue for months, where they have the consistency of play dough.

Very likely this is from early harvesting and/or (I'd guess) heat damage. I'd try putting any i had left in a paper bag on the counter with an apple or a banana in with them. For science. Sometimes innermost meat doesn't ripen at pace with the outer meat

It’s been this way for months. We’ve explored many options. Different stores, grabbing ripe/non ripe avocados, and they’re consistently moldy/rubbery.

Yuk! "COULD" be nothing more nefarious than improper harvesting or handling. Maybe, previously frozen? Our agriculture system is rife with ineptitude and negligence. Certainly bears looking into. If, for no other reason, than to improve our food quality.

If I had to guess I’d say the harvesting is being rushed due to demand while there is a lack of supply due to drought. 🤷‍♂️

Noticed the same. Early in summer we were buying the best at Sprouts, stopped buying them in early August because every one of them was inedible. Either black and rotting or rubbery. We bought from about 6 different stores thinking it was a supplier problem, all had issues.

You will have this happen in many fruits. Tomatos are sold on a vine. There is reason for that also.

This might be controversial in the states, but when I lived in Chile we considered the green (inside) avocados not ripe yet. They were considered ripe when they looked like the one you brought into the video, a little brown on the edges, green, and that yellowish inside. They will mush up and make the best guac. It used to be hard to find those when we came back because they have to ship them to the states greener. Many don't realize most fruit and vegetables shipped from S.A. it's picked and shipped early so it doesn't spoil on the ship. Many also don't realize that unless you've had it ripened in the vine, you're missing a ton of flavor and what it really tastes like properly ripened.

Absolutely agree with that, but this issue is unique to us just recently. Play doughy always, sometimes rotten, never the soft/brown ripe that makes them good. Probably going on 4 months now.

Sounds like they're just picked too soon then. We've tried to ripen some in a paper bag or just on the counter before and usually met with mixed results. The ones that ended up like yours we determined were picked way too early.

That’s my thought. I think they’re harvesting them too early. Maybe the demand is outpacing the supply and they’re rushing them to market.

It is. This is one of the symptoms of the war on civilians. Less care, higher price less quality. = angry civilians= food riots 5yrs later. = more police control. More lock downs. Rinse and repeat the last 10yrs. Its sounds crazy but its been implemented, especially the education

Wild. Definitely wasn’t an issue in our area that far back. My wife has been an avocado addict for as long as I’ve known her.

Seems like a 50/50 chance of them being bad. It's gotten to the point where we don't buy them as often as we used to. I often wonder if it is genetic, cultivation, storage or a transport issue. Probably a bit of all the factors.

Hey man, I was the same for 40 years. I didn’t start eating them until the last few years. Even now I could take them or leave them. My wife loves them though.

The texture and taste is off.

Avocados picked too immature, temperature swings (especially chilling injury from being stored too cold), heat stress, or 1-MCP applied at the wrong dose or on fruit that then sits too long. I have a friend who works for a large grocery store chain. They store immature fruit for long periods of time in low oxygen (typically 2–5 %) plus elevated carbon dioxide. This keeps the fruit in a sort of stasis but it never gets the tree ripening needed to have good flavour. That's why produce is so tasteless now. They can store apples this way for up to a year.

They are picked green… and then I don’t know how they hold them after harvesting before they get them to the store. And that could be the difference because out here in California I lived on 4 acres with avocado trees, and we never once saw this…

Organic or Non-Organic? I think people saw this with non-organic bananas as well where they had a rubbery consistency like you are describing.

They are probably the bill gates avocados. They gas them with APEEL to keep them fresh longer. Wouldn’t recommend eating. Buy the organic ones but still the APEEL has been approved for use in organics also. You are really just stuck with your local farmer market if you want to eat healthy. I only use the local butcher now and the local farms I know

I've had several "unripe " that were literally like plastic. Hard to slice and never mush up. Impossible to make quac.

First issue is avocados taste like sh*t. Second issue is they are overpriced. Thirst issue is the taste like sh*t.

Since like 90% of our avacados are imported from Mexico, take it up with Mexican farmers who harvest them.

The avocados in our local grocery store are exactly like these. Absolutely disgusting. I can’t stand Wally World but unfortunately ours always has good ones and we eat them pretty much daily. So friggin Wally world it is.

Another alternative is tropical avocados from the Dominican Republic...they are good and huge! Turn bad food into the health department or contact your states health and human services. Grocery stores have to prove their food is real and viable for human life and consumption.

We want her round avocados and they haven’t gotten the memo. Put them next to ripe banana and help them ripen, or buy them when in season, or frozen. The frozen halfs are great
