For Walt Disney, Snow White was his biggest risk yet. He put all of his finances, both personal and corporate, into its success. If it had failed, it would have been the end of Disney. But it didn’t, and it made Disney what we know it to be today. However, the following three films, Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi, failed at the box office, and Walt was broke once again. Walt was always risking it all in search for something greater. Sometimes finding success, sometimes finding failure, but never giving up.

Actor William Fichtner explains how the lowest point of his career, long before his success, became the turning point that kept him going: He shares a moment from his early days in New York when everything he'd worked for felt like it was slipping away. "I think I was 30 years old and I was in New York and I hit the end of the road. I ran out of money. I had no commercial residual. I had nothing." After a few years of scraping by, a little money in theater and a few residuals from commercials, he had to go back to waiting tables. And it crushed him to compare himself to everyone he'd come up with: "I felt like I was falling backwards and I was 30 now. Everybody that I knew I graduated college with [had] a company car and I was just... it was depressing." He describes the morning he went to ask for a brunch shift at the White Horse Tavern in the West Village, a place he knew people went to: "I woke up. I was brushing my teeth. I started crying. I really was. I was walking that street going, 'Just, it's all right, man. It's all right. You're not falling backwards. You're not going off the end of the earth.'" On the walk, it got worse before it got better. He passed someone from his past: "I passed a guy that I hadn't seen in a couple of years that was like kind of like an old friend. And I said hi to him and he walked by and he just kind of looked at me like he didn't recognize me. It was horrible. It was just horrible." Then he walked into the restaurant, and the manager met him with hostility, telling him he was on the schedule the day before, hadn't even started, and was already fired. But instead of breaking him, it freed him: "I said, 'Thank you.' I walked out of there. I said, 'I have absolutely nothing right now and I'm feeling so good and I'm not working at your f****** restaurant today, buddy.'" He went home to find a place to re-energize. Looking back, that brutal day became a great one: "Just great, great day." The lowest point can feel like proof you're failing, but sometimes it's just part of the process. Demi Lovato literally collaborated with the Jonas Brothers to write "La La Land," a song about staying true to yourself despite the pressures of Hollywood. She was calling out Hollywood's fake expectations at the very start of her career and doing it under the Disney umbrella. The music video even featured the entire Sonny With a Chance cast to help promote the show. Trying to erase Demi from Disney Channel's golden era is just rewriting history, y'all. It's also one of my favorite Demi songs ever. The message was way ahead of its time, and keep in mind she was only 15 years old when she made it. Her impact during her Disney years should never be underestimated. When Demi had her moment, she absolutely owned Disney. You can never erase the mark she left on that era. She is by far one of, if not, the strongest singer to came out from Disney Channel and I stand by that statement 🤷

We grew up watching hand-drawn Disney, and now it's gone. We don't talk about this enough. Most people have no idea what level of work went into these films... To draw one cathedral, Disney's artists went and spent days inside the real one, climbing through the passageways and towers of Notre-Dame with a historian, so that a cartoon would get the stones right. That was for The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1996. The team made more than one trip to Paris, and the film was the first made at Disney's new animation studio in the city, a collaboration between American artists and Parisian ones led by the brothers Paul and Gaëtan Brizzi. This is the thread that runs through Disney's Paris: the city keeps pulling the studio back. The Aristocats, in 1970, is a valentine to an older Paris of grand apartments and rooftop cats, though the animators packed the skyline so tightly that Notre-Dame ends up standing almost next to the Eiffel Tower. It will never cease to amaze me: every single frame of the old Disney movies was put down by a human hand. Today everything chases realism, and somehow, the more real it looks, the less alive it feels…
