// a few thoughts on remote work for animators (especially important for aspiring animators) my story: let's rewind the clock back to this animation. You're looking at a very rare 17 year old gameplay prototype animation done for the next gen Prince of Persia series at the time. What crazy about this clip is that it was done by 1 animator in a couple days. I literally saw it animated from start to end with my own eyes. The animation quality in this clip is off the charts, especially when you take into account the animations being released during that era. Now imagine me, in my squeaky chair, swiveling around every few hours to feast my eyes on this animator's dual 27-inch ViewSonic CRT screens. There was an air of magic in those moments, seeing the Prince of Persia coming to life only a few meters from my desk. When I would turn back to try and resume my work, my first thoughts were always "how the heck is he animating so fast and so well!" - What's even more puzzling was how he had so much control over the 3dsmax Biped, it had NO friggen F-curves, for crying out loud! loll - who was this animator? The monitors I would stare at from my desk belonged to Emile Ghorayeb. Just search his name and you'll see his IMDB credits. He was THAT good back then so you can only imagine how insanely good he is right now! Today, he's a very good friend of mine that I love very much and we have a lot of wonderful industry related memories that we share! - why does going to the office matter? Every day going to the office, I'd be really excited to see my team and eager to see what Emile was working on! I couldn't wait to dive into my own animations, driven by the aspiration that one day, just maybe, I could reach a level of skill and finesse comparable to the incredible quality he brought to his animations. - conclusion Remote work is wonderful, don't get me wrong, it's given us all opportunities we would have never had before and I'm super grateful for it. That said, for next generation of talent that hasn't yet experienced it. Try and work from the office, if you can. In my opinion, it's the best place to learn, to get inspired and certainly the best place to make some wonderful friends that will be a part of your animation journey for life! Streetopia - Get Out Of Reet 🎬 Introducing the initial installment of an evolving tale brought to life by Generative AI. This captivating narrative has emerged from numerous poorman experiments and showcases the potential for an ongoing series of bite-sized episodes, each lasting under a minute. How I did do it? 1. All 3-4 shots of me are on green screen. 2. Backgrounds were created in a photo editor using stock pictures. Mostly stitched. Different aspect ratios. 3. I downloaded static 3D models & Animated models (greenscreen/alpha) and played with them in my motion graphics editor. Filled in some storefront windows with more videos. 4. Did some masking magic, camera movement, and played with layers and depth... for example, I masked the sky to add a storm and t-rex 🦖 5. Sent individual clips to Superstudio (in 4k) 6. Exported favorite renders (in 4k) and sent them to my video editor for choppin', sound design (poppin'), and voiceover (in 4k). See thread for examples. Challenges: • I wish I had a treadmill to actually look like I'm walking. • I was lucky with frame consistency. Except for the wide shot that fuzzed my face (me on the couch). I re-did the shot on Kaiber in a close-up and manually key-framed my face on that wide shot. • I couldn't do much about the buggy eyes in the last clip. • No butterflies were harmed in this video. How long did it take: • A day and a half with tons of happy accidents • How long will it take you? Probably much longer if you don't know how to shoot, edit, design, composite, edit sound, or know where to look for assets. But it's not impossible! What's the plan? To continue the story while still learning and experimenting along the way. This is a much longer process. Very tiring. Might try doing it weekly or bi-weekly. What's the story about? In the quest to escape Reet, everyone yearns for freedom. Ricardo, however, carries a hint of cynicism. He finds pleasure in the disorder and may seem reluctant to lend a hand. Nevertheless, the encounters with diverse characters along his odyssey will ignite a transformation within him, although not without challenges. How I created these landing pages with Gemini 3 from start to finish First, I start with the hero section. It includes the nav bar, eyebrow, headline, subheadline, cta, social proof and visual. I spend 50% of the time here because it sets the colors, typography, spacing, which AI uses for the rest of the site consistently. “Create the hero section for my {app} called {name} in the style of {reference_site}”. Pro tip: use a screenshot and you’ll get way better results. Let’s get into the details. For icons, I prompt: “Use Iconify {icon set name}”. Most people use Lucide, but there are hundreds of open-source sets on Iconify like Solar, HeroIcons, Iconoir, Phosphor, etc. Just need to mention in the prompt. Same for custom fonts. For the animation, I prompt: “Animate fade in, slide in, blur in, element by element. Use 'both' instead of 'forwards'. Don't use opacity 0.”. This creates a subtle intro animation the first time users land on your page. Gemini 3 is an excellent animator. For example, I created the beam animation with this prompt: “Add noodles that connect and beam animate into the right circle. Add subtle details to the right beam animation circle with sonar and decorations.” For background animation, I use Unicorn Studio. Remix one of their templates and watch people click on your cover like crazy. What can I say, people love lasers. In the hero or right below it, social proof is super important. You can put ratings or logos, or both. For logos, you can prompt: “Animate the logos with marquee animation looping infinitely using duplicated items and alpha mask.”. Now the CTA. AI always creates basic buttons, which is fine 99% of the time. But Gemini 3 now sets a high bar for baseline design, so you will need to stand out. That’s why I put the extra human touch on animations and lickable buttons. I suggest browsing UIVerse and Codepen for buttons and reference the code in your prompt: “Change main button {code} and secondary button {code}. Add a 1px border beam animation around the pill-shaped main button on hover.”. Once you’re happy with the hero, you’ll want to craft new sections based on your business. Features, action plan, pricing, testimonials, FAQ, CTA and footer are the popular ones. Insert a screenshot and prompt “Adapt a new section, change texts, names and numbers”. Gemini 3 is very smart. It reads your existing styles and site concept and will tastefully mold new designs to fit perfectly into your current site. Finally, repeat the same prompts for icons, buttons and animations. Use midjourney images and remix using Nano Banana Pro. Ask ChatGPT to come up with better headlines, features, ctas, etc. Don’t skip the human part, this is where you’re irreplaceable. When I saw the mask "Tribes of the Calf" from Kanbas I knew I had to make it into reality. The jewelry and gold really made it stand out for me. Since Sam Spratt's The Masquerade was revealed, I have been spending time sculpting and dissecting the mask to recreate it in 3D as faithfully as possible. I delved into the creation of this mask for many reasons. I love a good challenge and this mask surely was one for me. Creating something in 3D from a 2D image is not easy, and especially when the source has generative nature, some stuff is hard to interpret, but I tried my best to make sure the visual integrity of the mask is as close to the original as possible. Splitting the whole mask into parts, filling the missing pieces so I can build the textures was quite a lot of work. I tried to present the mask in my own style with a slightly different colorway to adapt to the mask itself. Testing one of the best safety features of an airplane, the “Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System” (EGPWS, pronounced E Gyp-Wiz). It’s part of every preflight check. Sound on! It’s a warning system. While the jet has separate warnings for things wrong internally, EGPWS is concerned about what’s outside the jet, not what’s inside. It’s primarily concerned w/ terrain & obstacles…EGPWS can “see” outside when pilots can’t. It doesn’t actually see anything, though. There are no cameras or lasers. EGPWS does use the jet’s radar, but not for detecting terrain. (We’ll talk more about radar in a minute, but it’s not useful for orienting yourself to terrain in the vertical. It has a “map” mode that you can use to “paint” things like cities, lakes & shorelines, but it only knows how strong the reflection is & how far away, not how high. We almost never use it in map mode, anyway) EGPWS uses the jets navigation systems – like GPS, Inertial Reference, Altimeters, airspeed, etc. – to plot a position in a virtual world. This world is contained in a database on the jet; it’s constantly plotting your position & then estimating where you’ll be in the next few minutes if the trend continues. The virtual world database knows where the mountains are. When you get close to airports in the database (not all airports are in it), it knows where the buildings & antennas are, too, out to a certain radius. Past that radius, it stops caring about the manmade objects. Anyway, it can tell if you will hit something on your current trend & will issue various warnings. It can give you up to 60 seconds of warning. It starts out slow, like saying “CAUTION, TERRAIN”, but if you don’t fix it, it gets serious…“TERRAIN, TERRAIN, PULL UP!”. You’re 20-30 seconds from impact. It’s not a miracle worker, though. It can wait to give you a warning that you can’t fix. Imagine flying toward a 10,000’ high cliff at 1,000’. A 60 second warning will not be enough time to climb 9,000’ & clear it. Or, it sees a mountain to your right, but your current path is clear. It doesn’t know you’ll do a 90° right turn once abeam the mountain. Now you’ll get some late warnings. EGPWS has various other functions. If you get on the approach but haven’t configured to land, it will say “TOO LOW, FLAPS” (or GEAR). If you start getting below the glidepath, it will say “GLIDESLOPE”. Start descending right after takeoff? “DON’T SINK”…and if you do keep sinking, it switches to “PULL UP!” Now, EGPWS doesn’t use the onboard Doppler radar for any of these functions, but it does use it to detect windshear. EGPWS doesn’t care if you turn on the radar or not, it turns it on itself when you push the throttles up for takeoff or when you descend below a certain altitude on approach. It takes about 12 seconds for the radar to build a picture from that point, but once it does, it can “see” windshear. The Doppler detects this by bouncing radar off of particulates & reading how they are moving at different altitudes. The particulates can be dust or just humidity…the radar can’t read air molecules by themselves. So, it’s still possible to get windshear the radar doesn’t see on very dry, clean days. EGPWS hates windshear. If it detects it, EGPWS replaces your screen w/ the radar – even if not turned on by you – & starts with a gentle warning to “MONITOR RADAR DISPLAY”. If you get closer to it, you get “WINDSHEAR AHEAD” (on takeoff – abort if you still can) or “GO AROUND, WINDSHEAR AHEAD!” (on landing). EGPWS is great, but can’t actually move the jet. Two days ago, I replied to a comment on my post and he said I did a sloppy job measuring EMF in El Salvador.
