Chris Kemp, CEO of Astra Space, sees sovereign access to space as critical to national security. We are proud and excited to announce a historic $5M investment in our new spaceport, Spaceport Canada! This investment and project is being developed to support NordSpace's Tundra launch vehicle and bring Canada one major step closer to sovereign launch as the nation's first operational spaceport. Read all the details in our press release: Canada is the only G7 nation without sovereign launch capabilities. In addition to countless benefits for Canada’s national security, environmental protection efforts, and global leadership, such a capability would result in an estimated 650 new highly qualified personnel (HQPs) over the next decade alone and $2.5B in economic development. NordSpace is working actively with the Canadian Government to ensure the success of Spaceport Canada, and would like to thank Transport Canada, NAV CANADA, Global Affairs Canada, Canadian Space Agency, and Space Canada | Espace Canada for their continued support. A second launch pad, Pad B, is also planned to support partner launch vehicles under the upcoming Technology Safeguards Agreement with the United States. Europe has been shy in coming to terms with the legitimate role cooperative space plays in our security and in our geostrategic independence. It is now quite clear, however, that Europe’s space and defence autonomy has become one of our Continent’s foremost priorities. Andrius Kubilius and I have a plan for a coordinated effort to increase European space resilience from space. Our vision is long-term, structured, bold and an important step in permanently integrating security in our collective space efforts. The European Parliament and the European Commission, in collaboration with European Space Agency, organised the ‘General Assembly Defence, Space and Cybersecurity’ to promote dialogue between European and national decision-makers, and industry representatives in the context of the unprecedented geopolitical challenges that the European Union is facing. Obayashi Corporation, which built the Japan's tallest tower, plans to start building a space elevator in 2025 with the aim of it being operational by 2050. That's the same year Japan hopes to achieve carbon neutrality. The construction process is expected to be done in several stages.

Elon Musk announced a chip factory 10 times the size of Tesla's Gigafactory. The goal is to produce enough AI compute to equal twice the entire electricity consumption of the United States. He called it the Terafab. Here is the number that stopped me cold. The entire global AI chip industry right now is on track to hit around 100 gigawatts per year of compute. Every Nvidia GPU, every Google TPU, every chip from every company on earth combined. 100 gigawatts. Musk wants one factory to produce a terawatt per year. A terawatt is 1,000 gigawatts. Ten times the output of the entire global industry. From a single building. To put the scale in physical terms, the Terafab would need to be around 100 million square feet. You would need Starship point to point transport just to get from one end to the other. But the reason for the scale is not ambition for its own sake. To launch meaningful AI compute into space, you need a billion chips per year running at a kilowatt each. That is not a number the current industry can produce. The Terafab is the only way to get there. The timeline he put out: a gigawatt of space AI compute annualized by end of next year. Then 10x per year from there. 10 gigawatts by year two. 100 gigawatts by year three. A terawatt beyond that. Most people think orbital data centers are a decade away. Musk is building the factory to make them possible by next year.

Breaking! 🚀 🇨🇦 NordSpace successfully tested its fully integrated sub-orbital rocket, Taiga, powered by its proprietary and in-house 3D printed Hadfield engines and pressure vessels. This marks a significant step forward in preparation for Canada’s first commercial space launch. Taiga is the only commercial liquid rocket being developed in Canada, and is expected to launch later this year from our own spaceport, Spaceport Canada. Like the land, air, and sea, space is no longer some final frontier for Canada. Space is an essential domain we must unlock, and launch a capability we must own.
