NEWS: SpaceX requested on Friday that the FCC make “several small but meaningful updates” to its 2nd-generation Starlink network. “Together, this modification and its companion amendment will enable the Gen2 system to deliver gigabit-speed, truly low-latency broadband and ubiquitous mobile connectivity to all Americans and the billions of people globally who still lack access to adequate broadband.” The request includes lowering the altitude of three Starlink satellite shells by 45 and 60 km. SpaceX successfully simulated the deployment of 20 Starlink V3 satellites during Starship V3’s first flight. Starship V3 can hold up to 60 of these satellites. Each Starlink V3 satellite offers 1 Tbps of downlink capacity. That means a single Starship launch can add up to 60 Tbps of total downlink capacity to the network, more than 20x what a Falcon 9 delivers today with V2 satellites. Insane scale. If there is one thing that is abundantly clear after SpaceX's Q2 earnings call, it's that people are sleeping on Starlink Mobile. The potential of this business if vastly under-appreciated, and I think it will disrupt the legacy carriers in a way that most people aren't expecting. Just like what we saw with Hughnet after Starlink Residential launched, and with Viasat after Starlink Aviation launched, these legacy mobile companies will start to bleed users when these next-gen sats come online. Sounds like Starlink Mobile will have a reliable terrestrial service, even in urban areas, thanks to the use of base stations from existing Starlink dishes, lowering Capex spend on SpaceX's part.

Each satellite runs AI compute in orbit and beams results to Earth through Starlink lasers. The satellites draw constant solar power and cool for free in the vacuum. SpaceX filed that plan with the FCC in January. The first satellite, AI1, carries 150 kW of peak compute and spans 70 meters. Starship will carry 30 to 50 AI1 satellites per launch. Even ships at sea or aircraft in the sky can receive high speed internet service. Over 2/3 of the active satellites in orbit are Starlink now. And it won't create any long term trash in orbit. The orbits are so low (480 km to 550 km) that even if SpaceX were to lose control of one, the small satellites will run out of fuel within 5 years. Then they get dragged back into the atmosphere and burn up. Every satellite is in a lane to avoid other Starlink satellites. They all are connected to a collusion avoidance system and can make small course adjustments if needed. Starlink can provide high speed internet anywhere on the planet without having to bury expensive fiber cables underground or undersea. All you need is a small dish which scans the sky for the closest satellite to provide internet connectivity.
