I was playing with a similar trick recently and got awful results on mobile (textures flashing in and out etc.) - how does yours look?

You get some flashes of specular but its still pretty acceptable.

how does it render on lower graphics? i think at a low enough level the normals are completely ignored right?

Fun fact: It would take the average PC roughly 138,069,000 hours or about 15,761 years to render Avatar: The Way of Water. Here’s how I worked it out: The average PC in 2024 has 6 cores. The average blade on WetaFXs renderfarm has between 16-64 cores. There is roughly 414,000 frames in the finished film, accounting for half of the film being 48fps and half being 24fps at the final runtime of 192 minutes. Each frame took an average of 20-80 hours to render on WetaFXs blades depending on shot complexity and accounting for the 4K delivery resolution. With that info, we can work out the average: We say that the average Weta blade has 40 cores (average between the 16-64 count). That gives a Weta to PC core ratio of 6.67 We also say that the average render time per frame is 50 hours (average of 20-80) Total render time for Weta: 50 hours x 414,000 frames = 20,700,000 hours To work out how long this would be on the average home PC we must multiply by the core ratio from earlier: 50 hours x 6.67 = 333.5 hours per frame Total render time on a home PC: 333.5 hours x 414,000 frames = 138,069,000 hours, which converted to years is 15,761 DISCLAIMER: This is all an educated guess done for fun based on publicly available technical information about the film and Wetas renderfarm. Eric Rohmer on the use of Colour in "La Collectionneuse" (1967) and "Claire's Knee" (1970): "I didn't use color as a dramatic element, as some filmmakers have done. For me it's something inherent in the film as a whole. I think that in 'La Collectionneuse' (1967) color above all heightens the sense of reality and increases the immediacy of the settings. In this film color acts in an indirect way; it's not direct and there aren't any color effects, as there are for example in Bergman's most recent film, his second one in color, where the color is very deliberately worked out and he gets his effects mainly by the way he uses red. I've never tried for dramatic effects of this kind, but. for example, the sense of time-evening, morning, and so on-can be rendered in a much more precise way through color. Color can also give a stronger sense of warmth, of heat, for when the film is in black-and-white you get less of a feeling of the different moments of the day, and there is less of what you might call a tactile impression about it. In 'Claire's Knee' (1970), I think it works in the same way: the presence of the lake and the mountains is stronger in color than in black-and-white. It's a film I couldn't imagine in black-and-white. The color green seems to me essential in that film, I couldn't imagine it without the green in it. And the blue too-the cold color as a whole. This film mould have no value for me in black-and-white. It's a very difficult thing to explain. It's more a feeling I have that can't be reasoned out logically." Steve Wozniak tells the founding story of Apple and how he invented color on the computer Today Apple is valued at almost $3 trillion. But as Woz recounts, they got started selling $40 PC kits to hobbyists: “I had this computer, and I was giving away all the designs for free. Steve Jobs said ‘Wow, we should sell these PC boards. Build them for $20, sell it for $40.’” To fund the company, both Steves had to come up with a couple hundred bucks each, and Woz sold the most valuable thing he owned: his HP 65 calculator. The first PC boards were impressive—they could actually run software and programs. So impressive that the owner of a local electronics store placed an order for the first batch of Apple Is. But their second product—the Apple II—was their real breakout product, and one of the killer features was color. At the time, color only existed on TVs that cost thousands of dollars. But Woz figured out a way to get color on the Apple II with only a $1 chip. The idea for it came to a sleep-deprived Woz who was working on an arcade game for Atari that Jobs convinced him they could build in 4 days even though building an arcade game normally took six months: “I was in a dreamy state. You know when you lose sleep how you get a little creative thinking?… While my head was sort of half awake and half asleep, I saw this thing on the factory floor of Atari. All the games were black and white TVs, but this one game was going back and forth, changing color… I remember how the frequencies go from high school electronics. And then I came up with this method of taking a little chip and putting ones and zeros in it, and cycling around… I could make it look like color TV.” After building the first Apple II prototype, Woz recounts typing something in memory and a blue dot popping up on the screen: “I called Steve Jobs over and that was a Eureka moment. We were shaking. This was so big. All the colored games are now going to be on computers… That was probably my best patent… That’s why we chose a six color logo for our first logo for Apple. We were the ones that brought color because nobody would’ve ever expected color on an affordable computer… That was so far ahead of its time.”
