Spent this past weekend at Manhattan Baseball evaluating and helping develop player plans for every pitcher! Included in the eval was also a mobility and range of motion assessment. When creating a development plan, it’s important to have clear objectives and the “why” behind it. Ultimately, programs should be... striving to improve on field performance, not just to get good at whatever the “thing” is. Goals for each player are going to be broken down into 4 main buckets: • Mechanical • Pitch Development (movement and velocity) • Pitch Execution (command) • CRG and mental side Every player will have: • Throwing plan with drill package specific to them • Bullpen plans focusing on their needs and goals • Arm care routine • Mobility program tailored towards areas needed to improve (primarily focused on spine, hips, and shoulders) • Strength program Head coach, Steven Rosen and pitching coach Will Hesslink are building something very special in NY. Development is a calculated plan! And I LOVE the off season training. Here is 2023 2nd RD Pick Blake Wolters. To start~ Knowing where they are, what their timeline is (MILB’ers/HS/College) and what their goals are, is huge and necessary to begin. Without Divulging into everything we did, here is a bit about it as you physically see the change. What Blake needed 2.5 years ago was a plan, and a direction to attack his plan, and he did a tremendous job. What he needed was a strong front side, General Strength and a throwing Program, all of which was brand new to him. What to notice, you have a young pitcher who fills up the zone with mechanics that absolutely kill body awareness and Repeatable movements. That’s how you can tell the Immediate changes will cause immediate results velocity wise, and mentally is easier to focus on the process when the results improve. General strength was a breeze to Program. ANY Good throwing program Requires a well planned, thought out, and executed Strength program to work side by side. Every lift was based around Throwing/ Pitching all year. The volume and intensity of lifts and throwing consistently changes in order to promote the most growth possible, these are calculated changes. The Throwing Program is something the players have to perform, but not only perform but believe in. If you don’t believe in something you will not grow. (Using Pulse is a tremendous way to teach and create a feel for the body). Volume and intensity is the only thing that I like to really control. For players, learning a routine is key, especially applicable Plyo ball/ Med ball Routines are huge. Throwing programs are essentially the tip of a triangle, and are not working to its best ability if working alone. Throwing programs are 12 months long, they are not strictly for the off season. Now, as a Professional his training has varied tremendously as the development of the change up and shape of the fastball have taken a considerable amount of priority. This is where trackman and edger take serious precedence, to master the already elite craft. Working on creating an Outlier Pitch/Arsenal 2.5 years ago would have been a waste of time, because it was 81-84. Now, it will help increase the ability to perform through the Org. Every timeline is different, every situation is different, every Player’s routine is different, and every player is coached differently. Blake worked harder than anyone I’ve seen, and TRUE and CALCULATED hard work will show results “How can we attack the ZONE with our best stuff” “ Did I check every box today” Below, you will see corrective’s using the above methods.

He’s helping myself individually, but also in preparation for what kind of leader I need to be for the team.” You can’t ask your players to have an offseason development plan while failing to create one for yourself. COACHING HARD A lot of comments on recent videos asked what it means to coach players hard. I think the initial reaction to that we think of a Coach screaming and yelling. I don’t really consider that ‘Coaching Hard’. Coaching hard to me means you are fully invested in the player, want them to succeed, have had conversations with them about it, laid out the standards and expectations for them, then YOU HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE TO THAT. The coaching hard part takes different shapes and forms, it’s not always yelling… but the accountability and care has to be strict, that’s what makes it seem hard to the player

ARE 1 ON 0 WORKOUTS THE BEST WAY TO TRAIN? I moved away from 1 on 0 workouts a long time ago. They are great if the player has a specific technical need. It allows you to slow down and dive deep with the player. Other than that… multi player workouts are exponentially more productive and beneficial for the players. This allows them to still work on technical skill, but it allows you to put them in an environment where they have to read multiple players on the court- exactly how the game will be. Add in the fact that it forces players to compete and it’s a no brainer!

A lot of players and parents struggle with the idea that you don’t get unlimited mistakes and chances. At some point, if you aren’t producing, you won’t be able to play. This will happen to 95% of players.. whether it’s for a couple possessions, for a couple games, or for a season. The real tell is the players ability to learn from it and grow!

When a coach has health complications they are given grace by the media and the public because they are understanding of what they are fighting through. Deion Sanders he’s not been afforded that same empathy at Colorado this year. Despite being diagnosed with cancer, having his bladder removed and having a procedure in the middle of the season to alleviate blood clots, the tear downs of the man and his program have been relentless. The X’s and the O’s have to improve, but we can’t forget the human element of what has happened in Deion Sanders life this year. Coach Prime’s story was never meant to be perfect. It was meant to be powerful. And powerful it has been. With his Son’s not playing at Colorado, Coach Prime could have easily said, I’m done. I’ve had some health issues, Shedeur is in a bad situation in Cleveland, Shilo isn’t on a NFL roster and this just isn’t worth it anymore. But he didn’t because he made a commitment to every kid in his program and their parents that he was dedicated to building them into a complete man on and off the field. So at 3-6. Introducing the “Get” action in basketball to lacrosse! The “Get” is a 2man action where a player passes the ball to another player and sprints to go “Get” it back on a handoff. This action has similar concepts and reads to pick and roll, but the picker is actually the ball handler! In lacrosse, we have been experimenting with Gets because it creates so many interesting situations and reads for the players. The way we teach it in small sided games is to have one offensive player declare “I’m shut” and the defense has to face-guard him. From there we pick for the shut off player trying to spring them free for the Get. The ball handler has to engage and control their defender, anticipating the shut player trying to get open. The shut player can backdoor if being overplayed towards the get (rejecting the get), receive a flip, or continue curling around the ball getting open for a late pass. The ball handler can feed the reject, flip the ball, or fake the flip to attack the goal or make a late pass to the shut payer curling to the goal. I’ve seen examples of this run in men’s and women’s DI lacrosse at Ohio State and Northwestern, respectively and I’ve run this myself when I was coaching HS girls lacrosse. You will also see on this reel a sick application for Gets vs. a common big-little invert coverage where the short stick doesn’t go behind with his man and plays “Safety” in front of the net. Gets are fun for the players, are incredible for teaching your players 2man game on and off ball, dealing with double teams, and creativity with passing, and can be used to score goals. The 10-15 seconds in between pitches are the most important time of a baseball game. All ballplayers should be looking to win this time. The best way to do that is having a set pre-pitch routine that they execute every pitch. A pre-pitch routine is simply what players do on a consistent basis in-between pitches. Most importantly, it’s how they breathe, focus, visualize, and talk to themselves. This is what helps them take control, keep it simple, and compete with all they’ve got ONE pitch at a time.

A manager trying to rouse his players… Cortical arousal…a call for mental activation and physical intensity… Mikel Arteta using words, sentences, phrases enveloped in tone, volume, rhythm, pause…trying to tap into memory, striving to evoke pain and pleasure, cautioning threat while willing reward. Motivation - to move towards and to move away from. Mental activation… The challenge for any coach is to recognise the cause of performance lapse. Do my players need to rise in intensity or do I need to cool the nervous system? Might a rise be true for one and a drop be true for another? Should this come from me or should this come from my players? Questions…questions! For me…pre-planned: -individual mental frameworks -a team mental framework Then time for: -players to group together to speak -the coach to assert the tactical plan enveloped in those mental frameworks -mini individual conversations An all-in feel…an integrated approach. Cortical arousal, narrative, and meaning in competitive sport are strange things. One player is best served in a state of physical dominance while another is best suited to a playful state akin to playing mate’s football. Player one: dominant, relentless, strong Player two: playful, focused, free No hard, fast rules other than this - each and every player has their ideal mind and body state that helps them to anticipate, make decisions, co-ordinate their body, and execute at an appropriate physical intensity. And that state must be found and maintained in each and every game. I love Mikel Arteta’s passion. I love his energy and his vibrancy. I also love the complexity of the human. With 11, 13, 15, 18 plauers all gawping at you, hanging on every word you say…you never quite know whether the content or the delivery is suited to everyone in the room… …you never quite know… And that’s what makes sports coaching so much fun and so intriguing. That no matter who you are and no matter what level you coach at…coaching is a decision-making process where even the very best and even the very famous are making a best guess most of the time. Cortical arousal, narrative, and meaning in competitive sport are strange things. One player is best served in a state of physical dominance while another is best suited to a playful state akin to playing mate’s football. Player one: dominant, relentless, strong Player two: playful, focused, free No hard, fast rules other than this - each and every player has their ideal mind and body state that helps them to anticipate, make decisions, co-ordinate their body, and execute at an appropriate physical intensity. And that state must be found and maintained in each and every game. I love Mikel Arteta’s passion. I love his energy and his vibrancy. I also love the complexity of the human. With 11, 13, 15, 18 plauers all gawping at you, hanging on every word you say…you never quite know whether the content or the delivery is suited to everyone in the room… …you never quite know… And that’s what makes sports coaching so much fun and so intriguing. That no matter who you are and no matter what level you coach at…coaching is a decision-making process where even the very best and even the very famous are making a best guess most of the time. What advice would the Alabama football coach give him – a basketball player – to improve in his sport? Saban’s response is gold: “I think for any athlete, it's the same thing. What's your goal? What's your aspiration? What do you want to accomplish? That's the first thing. “Second thing is to define what it takes to do it. What does it entail for you to be the kind of basketball player that you want to be? “Then you got to make the decision. Are you willing to do that? Are you willing to go work every day and do the things you need to do and take 500 shots a day like Kobe Bryant did so that you can be the kind of player that you want to be? “And then do you have enough discipline to make yourself do it every day? Whether you feel like it or not. “You got to choose to get up. You got to choose to study. You got to choose to go make the shots. You got to choose to work out. A great way to do that is for players to have a set pre-pitch routine that leads to them taking control of their thoughts, their breath, their self-talk, and their focus. This will help them regulate their emotions, reset, gain self-control, block out distractions, and maintain composure during high-pressure situations. Competition can be chaotic and unpredictable. So, the key is for players to have a system in place to deal with adversity not IF, but WHEN it comes their way so that they aren’t surprised by it.
