My highlight of the week: helicopter-under water escape training 🌊🚁 After returning from space, astronauts typically land with their spacecraft in the ocean. We are retrieved by an incredible team of Flight Surgeons and Crew Support Officers, who pick us up by helicopter and bring us safely back to land. And as always, we also prepare for things that might go wrong there. Training to escape from a capsized helicopter is essential not only for astronauts, but for the entire crew involved. In the event of an emergency water landing, the team only has a few seconds to get out -helicopters are top-heavy, so they can overturn and sink quickly. To prepare us for every possible scenario, the instructors challenged us in all kinds of ways: tinted goggles that block visibility, climbing out through a different window than the one next to us, escaping without using our emergency air supply, and more. All of it designed to help us stay calm and focused - no matter what might happen in an emergency. It’s the kind of training no one ever hopes to use in real life, but if you do, it’s absolutely critical. European Space Agency

During my meeting with UK Secretary of State for Defense John Healey, I briefed him on Russia’s overnight strike on our energy infrastructure and people. Moscow is trying to use cold weather as a tool of terror, which is why work on additional air defense capabilities for Ukraine is now an urgent priority. We know which partners have the relevant missiles and equipment, and I am sincerely grateful to the United Kingdom for its readiness to help. We also discussed how a British contingent could be deployed to operate alongside French forces if diplomacy works to end the war. It is crucial that the framework for ending the war includes a clear response from the allies should Russian aggression be repeated. I thank the Secretary of State, his team, and the Government for their strong support throughout all these years of the full-scale invasion, and for the truly successful projects we are implementing together, including in the area of joint drone production.

🇸🇴Down the Money Lane🇸🇴 In the 19th and early 20th centuries (as recently as the 1950s), Ethiopia, with the help of European colonizers, took control of a vast somali land known as Western #Somalia, or #Ogaden, now referred to as the Somali Region of #Ethiopia. In 1977-78, #Somalis from that region rose in revolt, and the government of Somalia came to their aid. Together, they liberated their land. At that time, Ethiopia was led by a Marxist-Leninist military regime. Somalis captured nearly all of their territory, and as the map shows, they were close to reaching Addis Ababa. The Warsaw Pact, led by the Soviet Union, then entered the war to support their client state and ally in the Horn of Africa. Against the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact forces, which included troops from Cuba and South Yemen, Somalia could not hold its ground and ultimately had to retreat. Yet, Somalis everywhere, including those who lived and still live under leaders like Abiy and other colonial figures, have never forgotten how their land was taken through treachery, and how, in reality, they remain colonized. “Cleared to fly under bridges.” 😎 That’s how the day started at the International Helicopter Training School of the German Army in Bückeburg! 🚁 🚁 A helicopter flies low (sometimes very low…) and can land almost anywhere; it’s the only real example of a near-vertical landing on Earth, unlike airplanes, which need to glide in on a runway. That kind of landing we can expect… on the Moon! 🌕 🚀 The Apollo missions already showed how challenging it is to pilot a powered descent onto an unprepared surface: no runway, no control tower, just a rough landing zone with very few visual cues to judge speed or distance. The lunar surface is flat, monochrome, full of optical illusions and long shadows; it's a pilot’s nightmare! 😅. 🇩🇪 That’s why, here in Germany, we’re (Alex, Matthias, Sam, and I) training on Airbus EC135 helicopters with the Bundeswehr to master the techniques that will one day help Artemis crews touch down safely on our satellite by 2035. 🤞 Instructors from Germany, Denmark 🇩🇰, Sweden 🇸🇪,, and the Netherlands 🇳🇱 are absolutely top-notch, and the organization and hospitality are too!
