Spot area lights can be tricky to implement because they don't have a simple physical meaning (condensers, reflectors, shutters, barndoors... they all act in a very different way). However, decent basic controls are fundamental to give artistic control over lighting.

Looks really cool! What would you consider decent basic controls?

Few controls giving a good range of shaping in a predictable way. A way not to implement a spot area is to restrict emission with a cone by each point in the light surface (cone convolved over the area). That makes the light darker and darker as the cone shrinks.

This is incredibly beautiful!

For directionality it is much better to control a spot area light from its target rather than from the origin. You could also scale the manipulator lines to show the distance fade.

I need to do some work on the manipulators, I agree. I need to make one specific to lights, it’s in my todo list. About the cone scale, yes it’s there, I don’t show it, but in the video you can see it just below the spot controls in the UI.

Wow! Please release this I want to play with it .

This was very enjoyable to watch. Is this experimental software your custom work from start to finish!? This has been extremely impressive to witness grow over time!

That’s correct. Besides a handful of foundational libraries, it’s all written new.

What kind of renderer is this btw?

It’s a path tracer, currently running in CUDA on an NVIDIA GPU.
