Stack Overflow founder Joel Spolsky on why you should make your product free After the dot com crash, Joel read a blog post by Ev Williams titled “The End of Free.” As Joel explains, the blog post argued that software was no longer going to be free: “He was... like: ‘I would rather have a company with 400 customers paying me $10 a month so that I can eat stuff than 400,000 customers that don’t pay me anything and I can’t eat stuff.’… That was very influential at the time, and we were like: ‘Yeah! We’re always going to charge for all the things.’” At the time Joel was building a remote tech support product called Copilot: “We were very much of this ‘end of free’ mentality. So we were like: ‘And it’s 5 bucks! That’s a good price for helping somebody fix their computer’.” But Joel believes this was a fatal mistake: “What we should have done is made it free and then figured out how to pay for it later, which would have been to go to professional tech support departments and sell them the advanced version that lets them run a team of 1,000 tech support people… And sell it to them for a million dollars. But get the marketing from the free product.” He did not make the same mistake when he founded Trello (acquired for $425M): “I think in 2000 I would’ve made that mistake again. I would’ve been like ‘Hey it’s software like Microsoft Word. It’s $20 a month or whatever.’ But what we said was we want a hundred million people to eventually use Trello, of whom the 1% that gets the most value out of it pays us $100 a year. Then it’s a $100M business and it’s worth $1 billion and we’re done.” As Joel explains: “99% of the people are just going to get it for free, but when you focus on the 1% that find it most useful, they will pay you. They will pay for added features and they will pay you anything you want because they’re making money off of it.” He gives an example of Deutsche Bank making a billion dollars a day selling derivatives - they would pay almost anything for Microsoft Excel because it’s essential to that massive business. That is all great in theory, but it also misses how many of these products are created that: - Focus on purely getting huge not paying customer base - Uses that customer base to look for a buyer for a ridiculous amount of money - New owner tries to figure out how to monetize which starts breaking the product - Product is shutdown and users get left stranded

My cousins and my brother and I were exploring Coney Island, we saw the sights, hung out at the arcades and before we went back to the apartment we decided to go and get something to eat, we had some money on us but not much so we decided to see what we could get at one of the vendors. This was back in the early 90’s when most of them had dollar slices of pizza wherever we went. So we got 4 pieces of pizza, should have been $4 because that’s the price we were used to. The guy wanted to charge us $24 at $6 a slice. We argues with him because one of my cousins already took a bite being so hungry. But at the least we owed $4. We gave the other slices back and refused them but had to pay for the partially eaten one, it was embarrassing that an adult would try that on a bunch of kids. We told our uncle what happened and he went back and yelled at the vendor. He was familiar with them because he used to get slices all the time from the same guy and he never charged my uncle that price. I couldn’t imagine paying that exurban amount, like this guy who was being charged $54 for a hotdog by one of the vendors. At first he thought it was a typo and it was $5.40 but the vendor. Learned it up when he said no it was $54. Would you have paid that amount? I would have walked away, clearly he was trying to possibly scam a the man for looking like a tourist. Part of the experience when visiting a new area is the street food but it’s becoming more and more a chore avoiding places like this.

Jed York was asked if he feels like he owes it to the core of 49ers that are 30+ years old, to be active in free agency to try and “go for it” since they sat out free agency last year: “I think we always go for it. Free agency — I don’t know that it’s all cracked up to be. If there’s somebody we think is an impact player, we’ll add that person. Trent Williams was a third round trade. Not a massive decision to go make that trade, but a massive impact to our team. I don’t know what the haul of picks there were that we traded for Christian McCaffrey, but we traded a lot of picks. When those type of things come up, we will do what we can to add impact players to our roster. Remember when they sent Boeing 757 over there loaded with cash, hundreds of millions of dollars? You would have been very happy. Jaylen Brown says he used the NBA Players Association instead of hiring an agent for the NBA Draft because they're paid to help players “When I entered the draft, I didn't have an agent. I'm probably the highest picked selected ever that didn't enter with an agent. When I was evaluating, I went through the whole process and sat with a bunch of people, and what they was offering I ain't really need. It was kind of already slotted, so I leaned on the union a lot more” “A lot of the agents came and was like, ‘Yeah, we'll move you to L.A. We'll get you a trainer, put some money in your pocket,’ and I was like, ‘For what? Do I gotta give the money back?’ They was like, ‘Nah, but standard agent fee is 4%.’ I'm starting to do the math, and a house, car, and all that, whatever he was offering, is a lot less than what 4% would have been” “Long story short, the math wasn't mathing for me. Adam rejected a $600 million acquisition offer. His company is worth $170 billion today: “I like running my own business. It’s hard to imagine me as an employee.” “We were just growing really quickly and doing $50 million of EBITDA and we started getting offers from other tech companies to buy us. We got an offer for $600 million in cash. The challenge with that was we were still growing 100% year over year. But there’s a lot of zeros in $600 million. The problem was between the time of seeing that number and getting to a deal, your business has grown a ton. I would have sold the company but not at that number. I ended up walking away from the deal.” —- I asked Adam what the number would have had to been and he said $1 billion. Turning down this deal was one of the best decisions of Adam’s career. This is what he said: “We would have left a lot of money on the table. Most businesses when they sell, they lose the opportunity to keep innovating. Had we done that none of us would have known what this company could have become.”

We just want you to do it our way." No, but that's the wrong way. You have to do it this way. It's $50 million. We were very happy with that price. The government was like, "No, we don't want that." Gray TV’s Jon Decker: “Next week, you have a very important meeting with President Xi in Beijing. Secretary Bessent has said that a top priority on the agenda will be Iran. What do you hope to achieve with President Xi as it relates to Iran?” President Trump: “Well, I have a very good relationship with President Xi. You know, I find it to be a tremendous guy. And we get along well. And you see how we do. We’re doing a lot of business with China and making a lot of money. We’re making a lot of money. It’s different than it used to be. But I’ll be talking about it. That’ll be one subject. But he’s been very nice about this. You know, in all fairness, he gets like 60% of his oil from Hormuz. And he’s been — I think he’s been very respectful. We haven’t been challenged by China. They don’t challenge us, and he wouldn’t do that. I don’t think he’d do that because of me. But I think he’s been very respectful. And we’ve offered, you know, if he wants to send the ships to the United States — I think one of the big things that’s happened is I made a statement. Send your — send your ships to Texas. It’s not that much further. Send your ships to Louisiana. Send your ships to Alaska. Alaska is actually very close to a lot of the Asian countries. People don’t realize it. You know, Japan is back and forth. It’s like it doesn’t seem it, but it’s a very short route, two days shorter than almost any other route. We’re making tremendous big deals with South Korea and with Japan. But I said, send your ships. All of a sudden, I don’t know if you saw the graph today. Certainly, the Middle East would have been blown up. There wouldn’t be a Middle East anymore. They would have controlled. They would have taken over the Middle East. Now — now they’re trying to survive, and they won’t be successful unless they make a deal. They don’t make a deal. They won’t be successful. It’ll go very quickly and methodically. Believe me, it’ll be very easy. But we have so many alternatives. It’s amazing. And nobody knew this, you know, because as an example, Japan got 90 percent of their oil — or their — most of their energy, but most of their oil from the Hormuz Strait. South Korea got 43 percent of it, by the way, their ship was shot at. They were not in the cavalcade of ships they had. They decided to go it alone, and their ship got the hell knocked out of it yesterday. But they didn’t shoot the ships that were guarded by us, I’ll tell you that. We knocked down a lot of missiles. So, what happens is that we have a situation where we have total control. As you know, the blockade has been amazing. It’s like a piece of steel. Nobody’s going to challenge the blockade. And I think it’s working out very well. We’re going to see I can say this. Iran wants to make a deal. What I don’t like about Iran is they’ll talk to me with such great respect, and then they’ll go on television, they’ll say, we did not speak to the President. We did not. I just spoke to them. We did not speak to the President. So, they play games. But let me just tell you, they want to make a deal. And who wouldn’t? When your military is totally gone, we could do anything we want to them. Who wouldn’t?”

Now — now they’re trying to survive, and they won’t be successful unless they make a deal. They don’t make a deal. They won’t be successful. It’ll go very quickly and methodically. Believe me, it’ll be very easy. But we have so many alternatives. It’s amazing. And nobody knew this, you know, because as an example, Japan got 90 percent of their oil — or their — most of their energy, but most of their oil from the Hormuz Strait. South Korea got 43 percent of it, by the way, their ship was shot at. They were not in the cavalcade of ships they had. They decided to go it alone, and their ship got the hell knocked out of it yesterday. But they didn’t shoot the ships that were guarded by us, I’ll tell you that. We knocked down a lot of missiles. So, what happens is that we have a situation where we have total control. As you know, the blockade has been amazing. It’s like a piece of steel. Nobody’s going to challenge the blockade. And I think it’s working out very well. We’re going to see I can say this. Iran wants to make a deal. What I don’t like about Iran is they’ll talk to me with such great respect, and then they’ll go on television, they’ll say, we did not speak to the President. We did not. I just spoke to them. We did not speak to the President. So, they play games. But let me just tell you, they want to make a deal. And who wouldn’t? When your military is totally gone, we could do anything we want to them. Trump: I think it’s very sad, actually. I’m surprised that it wasn’t—you know—the public wasn’t notified a long time ago, because to get to stage 9, that’s a long time. I just had my physical. You saw that. You saw the results of that particular test. I think that test is standard to pretty much anybody getting a physical—a good physical. We had the doctors at the White House and over at Walter Reed, which is a fantastic hospital, do it. I did a very complete physical, including a cognitive test. I’m proud to announce I aced it. I got them all right. You proud of me? Your husband would be proud of me for getting them all right. It’s a little risk. If I didn’t get them all right, these people would be after me. It would be not a good situation. But I think, frankly, anybody running for president should take a cognitive test. They say it’s unconstitutional, but I would say in that particular case, having a cognitive test wouldn’t be so bad. But when you take tests—medical, as a male—that test is very standard. I don’t know if it’s given to everybody, but it’s given just about. And it takes a long time to get to that situation… to get to a stage 9. I think that if you take a look, it’s the same doctor that said that Joe was cognitively fine, there was nothing wrong with him. If it’s the same doctor, he said there was nothing wrong there. That’s been proven to be a sad situation. And the autopen is becoming a very big deal. You know, the autopen is becoming a big deal because it seems that maybe it was the president—whoever operated the autopen. But when they say that was not good, they also—you have to look and you have to say that the test was not so good either. In other words, there are things going on that the public wasn’t informed [about], and I think somebody is going to have to speak to his doctor—if it’s the same or even if it’s two separate doctors. Why wasn’t the cognitive ability—why wasn’t that discussed? And I think the doctor said he’s just fine, and it’s turned out that’s not so. It’s very dangerous… this is dangerous for our country. Look at the mess we are in. You talk about all these questions on Ukraine and Russia. That would’ve never happened, as an example, if I were president. It would’ve never happened. An MTV LA journalist on her encounter with ENHYPEN: -I’ve had experience with many kpop bands and all of them have been wonderful. But what I experienced with ENHYPEN was something very different, I’ll tell you why. The people that are behind the kpop industry are people who follow procedures very rigorously. There’s a lot of control over the questions you can ask, of what you get to say, of how they need to answer. If you didn't know, its a very strict world in that regard. So, usually with this type of interview, there's not a lot of room for you to interact with the talents outside of the cameras. Normally they're sitting down, waiting for someone to tell them the camers are rolling and for questions to be asked. They almost never interact or ask you questions, which could be due to the language barrier. But in this case it wasn't like that. From the moment they came in, they were super friendly, they greeted us all. You could tell they had watched the Norway vs. England game, and we started talking to them about it. We told them “right now, we’re rooting for Norway because England eliminated us”. They laughed and said “Ok we support Noway!” They were very chatty, very nice. We ended the “payaso de rodeo” portion super hyped and happy. We sang “ENHYPEN, hermano ya eres Mexicano (ENHYPEN, brother, you’re already Mexican)” and they were like “Wow, what does that mean?” and when we told them, they asked us what to do if the fans yell that at them, and we told them to say “Viva Mexico!”. There were a lot of interactions that didn’t come out on camera and that almost never happens to me with kpop artists. It doesn’t usually happen, so it surprised me that it was like that. It shows that they, even though they're huge worldwide, are still very humble people, very down to Earth. I am going to my grave regretting that dance segment. I don’t know when my brain decided to go the other side (taught them a slightly incorrect dance) But, either way, we had an amazing time. They had a lot of fun. I couldn't stay until the end of the show, so I found out after that they tried to dance it on the stage. But that they didn't do it right. I’m sorry… it was probably my fault! Anyways, I want to tell you that if you are an ENGENE and you support ENHYPEN, honestly, girl (or boy or them), you get everything… They're really people who are super, super nice. I was terrified, because I was called out once before for not knowing how to pronounce a Korean name, so I spent an entire day listening to a video of how to pronounce them, so something like that doesn't happen again. But honestly, from the moment they walked in, they took my nerves away. They made me feel like they were having a good time- I was having a good time, the team was having a good time, everyone was having a good time! And hopefully when ENGENE gets to see this content, they will be having an incredible time. I dont know when the whole interview will come out, but it'll air on the MTV LA channel. That, on top of lots of media, lots of features, lots of just random stuff that we do. Not to mention the fact that when we go into our games, there’s a lot of adrenaline. After every game, my body aches and my head hurts, and then we have to somehow get to sleep, and then we’ve got to wake up early and stuff. So there’s loads of factors into this. It’s not just simply, you go in and you play. And I think we started slow today, especially on Corrode and Lotus. A big map was Lotus for us, and we weren’t able to, just everything wasn’t going our way. The Odin was completely annihilating us. Then when we got to Abyss, we were like, ‘This is the last chance.’ And I felt very confident that we could win this one, because I felt like I knew everything they did on the attack side. And then, what were we like 1–11 down or something? I was like, ‘Oh bloody hell, this one’s going to be a tough one, isn’t it?’ We managed to do it, and then I was like, ‘Holy guacamole, the dream is alive!’ And it felt amazing, hearing the crowd and being able to just do that, because it would’ve been so disappointing of a final to just bomb out there. But in the FNATIC way, we fight back. Ascent, we’re starting to feel the kind of momentum. And then it gets to Sunset, a map that was the one kind of perma-ban we had, but we had some stuff on it. Unfortunately, it was just the crucial map for us to get the win, and some of the rounds just didn’t go our way, and that’s how VALORANT goes, you know. It felt like the rounds that we needed to win, we lost, and then they had an ultimate the next round, and that’s how brutal it is on defense. If we had just been able to win one of those rounds, like the bonus round, holy guacamole, we would’ve been loving life. And it was the difference of like a 1v1 in the end. So yeah, I mean, we tried our best. That’s why I’m not that [sad]. I am sad, obviously, but I’m not like how I was in Toronto, because I felt like we pushed, we tried our best, and I’m very happy with the boys.
