It is prefabbed modules stacked on the Hull and Deck of the rig. The modules are called by what they are designed to do such as the Drilling Well module, the Quarters module, where people sleep and eat, the power module, for steam and electricity, etc. So, basically, they place a section of the entire rig together in blocks with equipment already built into that block then stack them like a puzzle. I worked for Shell Oil as a Project Controls Engineer on many (TLP) Tension Leg Platforms that actually floated on the surface of the water. I started my career when the first TLP was being fabricated which was called Augar. Next was MARS, then RamPowell, then URSA, and finally Brutus all in the Gulf of Mexico. The platforms float on pontoons that are below the Hull and the Deck which sits on top of the Hull. Then all the modules are stacked on the deck with the equipment such as pumps, tanks, towers, exchangers, etc all placed on each module. The things are huge. From International Space Station, we have a unique vantage point to observe lightning storms from directly above them. Much like from the ground, they appear as rapid, intense flashes that are over as quickly as they started. But, with the help of handheld cameras and a bit of practice (and, admittedly, some luck), we can capture these intense flashes with a very high frame rate then slow them down to see how the lightning propagates. It's lightning, in slow motion. This is one that occurred over Indonesia on 6/28. I shot it for a half second at 1/120 frame rate, so, 60 separate frames. I then compiled those frames into two videos: the first, in real-time, and the second, slowed down so that each frame is a half second to highlight the progression of the flash. Note the incredible burst of light in one frame, which includes what is likely a TLE on the upper left. A TLE, or Transient Luminous Event, is an electrical discharge that happens in the upper atmosphere above lightning storms (if you haven’t seen Nichole “Vapor” Ayers TLE photo from last week, head over to her page). As their name implies, these are transient, or short lived, phenomena – it appeared in only one frame of the sequence, lasting for no more than 1/120th of a second. The last photo is that single frame. Absolutely incredible.

The third fully domestic prototype of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 regional airliner, developed by the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), has successfully completed its maiden flight at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Plant. 🚨 China just announced — on Saturday, after Trump’s Beijing summit — that it will reduce tariffs on American farm products. This is being framed as a Trump trade win. Here is the part that framing leaves out. US farm exports to China collapsed 65.7% last year. They fell to $8.4 billion. China had been one of the top three buyers of American crops. Trump’s tariffs closed that market. China retaliated with its own tariffs. American farmers lost a year of sales while Brazil and Argentina took the business. Brazil’s soybean exports to China hit a record 85 million metric tons in 2025. Today’s “win” is China agreeing to partly reopen the door the US closed.
