Stanley Kubrick uses his mastery of visual language so effectively in THE SHINING [1980]. Bless Shelley Duvall for having to walk backwards for four consecutive minutes while being berated by Jack Nicholson. I've left this whole scene intact so you can enjoy the tension buildup!

the tension is amazing, growing every second. nicholson and duvall are spectacular here, the fear is her face is genuine.

Carl Yastremski model Louisville Slugger. In case anyone is interested.⚾️😉

We watched it again last week. I’ll never get over Jack Nicholson’s performance.

Shelley really REALLY deserved so much praise for this role. Def an Oscar nom was warranted. I can not see Emma stone, Brie Larson, Mickey Madison, Natalie Portman, Jessica Chastain, gwyneth ever do anything like this and pull it off the way Shelley did.

That might be the scariest scene in the film when she realizes her husband has gone insane, and then the camera reveals that he has been watching her all along. Kubrick at his best.

It might have been better to cast the last guy you'd expect to go crazy, but I guess when you're actually named "jack". . .

apparently multiple takes of walking backwards that left her mentally and physically drained

Bring simple and slow back to filmmaking. We don't need harsh cuts, sudden tempo fluctuations - just let the movie breathe. All the best ones do.

What's so amazing about this terrifying scene is the way Wendy ends up on higher ground, and the menacing approach of Jack comes from below, and in spite of Wendy's literally "superior" position, we're utterly terrified for HER, even AFTER she strikes Jack unconscious!

Poor thing even won a cruel Razzie for her performance. I'm glad time showed her, while she was still sane, what a magnificent feat she achieved.

If she hadn't choked up so far, Scatman might have lived.

Love this scene and Shelley. She was a trooper!

And they probably had to film this fifty times. No wonder Shelley had a nervous breakdown that had serious effects on her. Kubrick was an egomaniac.

I love this scene. Love this film. However it’s the moment when you realise that Kubrick must’ve got fed up with Jack. “Honey, light of my life” is b movie acting. Kubrick often said that the only reason he did so many takes was because the acting wasn’t up to snuff.

Look at Wendy's boots and the bottom of her dress. Now look at the thunderbirds over the fireplace that Jack was throwing a ball at earlier in the film. Jack is messing with a thunder "bird." Not smart.

Wow. Still blows me away every time I see this scene.

Is this the infamous scene they did over 100 times?

That was in the bathroom

¿La brillante?,la ostia,y luego me quejo de lo que hacen es España con los títulos.

Just rewatched it

Amazing

this is playing at the theater today-- i might go see it. i hear it's good.

And that Wendy Carlos soundtrack!

4/10

At 18, I thought this was the most brilliant movie. At 63, I can’t watch it, it’s too awful and distressing.

Could there have ever been an uglier women in motion picture history?

Fine comedy 😁
