The original PlayStation’s impressive 3D capabilities have somewhat overshadowed it over the years, but SEGA was actually a company that was deeply committed to 3D gaming from the very beginning. In arcades, they were producing 3D games on a completely different level from their competitors, and they were constantly experimenting with new ideas on the home console side as well. If you look at the Mega Drive version of Virtua Racing, SEGA managed to bring over an arcade-quality experience by adding a special processor directly into the cartridge. Seeing that success, they likely realized that a dock-on device with its own dedicated hardware could allow the Mega Drive to handle 3D games—especially SEGA’s arcade-style 3D titles. One of Sega’s greatest strengths in the 1990s was its ability to create arcade games using 3D hardware that completely outclassed the competition. Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter were developed on the Model 1 arcade system, which was based on advanced 3D technology originally developed for military applications. A fantastic experience with possibly the most brutal sense of speed on a videogame, in a loud moving cabinet back then. Also highly playable on emulation with analog control support. So advanced that it only got matching versions on home systems for Sega 32X and Sega Ages compilation on Saturn, many years later.

In Korea, there weren’t any dedicated Neo Geo arcade cabinets, so I didn’t realize until much later that you could actually select from multiple games like this. It feels like this system was designed less for large arcade centers and more for smaller venues that only had one or two machines but wanted to offer a variety of games. Come to think of it, it might actually be a great choice to have at home even today.

I’ve been playing games since the ’80s, but the most shocking graphics I ever experienced had to be Daytona USA. Running on Sega’s Model 2 hardware with smooth 60fps and high-resolution visuals — I didn’t know the specs back then, but I could instantly tell it looked on a completely different level from other games. And that iconic “Let’s go away!” from the opening? One line and I’m right back in the arcade. Daytona USA 2 was great too, but somehow I still prefer the original’s unique speed and atmosphere. Pretty sure everyone tried this at the arcade at least once, right? 🎮
