Current Starlink satellites carry space lasers hitting 100 Gbps per link, with over 10,000 already operating and transmitting at least 42 petabytes of data daily. Reaching the Moon is a different challenge entirely. At 384,000 km away vs. a few hundred for LEO satellites, keeping a coherent laser locked on target is a serious engineering problem. SpaceX now has over 10,000 Starlink satellites in orbit (and growing), providing internet data service to every corner of the earth. Even ships at sea or aircraft in the sky can receive high speed internet service. Over 2/3 of the active satellites in orbit are Starlink now. And it won't create any long term trash in orbit. The orbits are so low (480 km to 550 km) that even if SpaceX were to lose control of one, the small satellites will run out of fuel within 5 years. Then they get dragged back into the atmosphere and burn up. Every satellite is in a lane to avoid other Starlink satellites. They all are connected to a collusion avoidance system and can make small course adjustments if needed. Starlink can provide high speed internet anywhere on the planet without having to bury expensive fiber cables underground or undersea. All you need is a small dish which scans the sky for the closest satellite to provide internet connectivity.

This deserves more attention, because it’s a really cool Starlink use case. They’re using collars on cattle that connect to Starlink satellites in space, allowing ranchers to create and adjust a “virtual fence” in real time right from their phone in the middle of nowhere. You don't need to be close to a radio tower anymore. Literally no-one has done this before.

NEWS: SpaceX has detailed Starmind, its plan for up to 1 million AI compute satellites in orbit, on a new website. Starmind moves AI data centers into space. Each satellite runs AI compute in orbit and beams results to Earth through Starlink lasers. The satellites draw constant solar power and cool for free in the vacuum. SpaceX filed that plan with the FCC in January. The first satellite, AI1, carries 150 kW of peak compute and spans 70 meters. Starship will carry 30 to 50 AI1 satellites per launch. SpaceX will build them at a new Gigasat factory in Bastrop, Texas. The AI chips come from a planned SpaceX and Tesla fab called Terafab. Two prototypes target early 2027, with thousands of satellites from late 2027.
