Sam Altman recently said, "If AI stays on the trajectory we think it will, then amazing things will be possible. Maybe with 10 gigawatts of compute, AI can figure out how to cure cancer." That's a fine quote. The abundance AI promises is super exciting. But Sam is saying that AI is going to figure out how to cure cancer. And if you've used these tools today, and talked to people who are at the labs, the reality is it's much more likely that humans will use AI to cure cancer. Steve Jobs: "I've made this mistake probably more than anybody else in this room." When challenged about Apple's technology decisions, Jobs shared a marketing lesson that changed how he approached building products: "You've got to start with the customer experience and work backwards to the technology. You can't start with the technology and try to figure out where you're going to try to sell it." He continues: "And I've got the scar tissue to prove it." Jobs explains that when developing Apple's strategy and vision, the starting point was always: "What incredible benefits can we give to the customer? Where can we take the customer?" Not: "Let's sit down with the engineers and figure out what awesome technology we have and then how are we going to market that." He acknowledges that some technologies might be impressive in isolation, capable of producing great demos or even small commercial applications. But as Jobs puts it, the hardest question is: "How does that fit into a cohesive larger vision?" Start with the experience you want to create. Then build backwards.

Final update: here's the footage from after the AI short aired at Annecy. When creating art we have to think of the mediums we use and the message that is conveyed. In this case, one cannot critique fascism while actively engaging (and supporting) it via the medium used (a LLM).

We don't know if the repercussions of AI will be good or bad, but we do know disruption will happen, and we know that it will happen much faster than in previous generations. The important thing isn't to panic or be frightened, but to understand the magnitude of the change we are facing.
