One of my favorite films. Steve Martin reflects on his time with John Candy, and the cut footage from the train station scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The entire ending scene was cut short and changed to what we see now —which Martin couldn't understand why, as Candy wasn't acting, nothing which could come from a script, but being himself.

Remembering John Hughes on his 76th birthday! John Hughes was known for staging improvisational moments for his actors in order to capture a genuine reaction. In this scene in "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" (1987) since he was not satisfied with the Owen scene introductions after several takes, he privately instructed Dylan Baker (Owen) to wipe spit in his right hand just before shaking hands with Neil Page. Steve Martin was not expecting this, thus his disgusted reaction to shaking Baker's saliva slathered hand. The film crew reportedly exploded in laughter as Martin ran off to wash his hands immediately following the encounter. Hughes got the reaction he needed and the footage was kept in the film. John Candy improv'd this entire speech from HOME ALONE (1990) on the spot because his character "Gus Polinski" was a last minute addition to the film. Candy filmed all of his scenes in one 24 hour crunch, mainly as a favor to writer/producer John Hughes whom he had worked with twice before on two other films, and because the budget at that point couldn't afford him. Candy reportedly made only $414 for the role. When HOME ALONE director Chris Columbus worked with Candy again on the film ONLY THE LONELY one year later, he said Candy would sometimes joke about how much he earned versus how much the film grossed, which was almost $500,000 WW.
