Remembering John Hughes on his 76th birthday! John Hughes was known for staging improvisational moments for his actors in order to capture a genuine reaction. In this scene in "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" (1987) since he was not satisfied with the Owen scene introductions after several takes, he privately instructed Dylan Baker (Owen) to wipe spit in his right hand just before shaking hands with Neil Page. Steve Martin was not expecting this, thus his disgusted reaction to shaking Baker's saliva slathered hand. The film crew reportedly exploded in laughter as Martin ran off to wash his hands immediately following the encounter. Hughes got the reaction he needed and the footage was kept in the film. It's the great John Candy's birthday so here's a fun story: The night before they filmed this scene from SPLASH, producer Brian Grazer said that John Candy had gone out to party with Jack Nicholson until 5AM the night before, immediately came to set after to film the racquetball scene, and Candy played the character how he really felt: Extremely hungover. Grazer said, "The night with Nicholson, I think he overdid it, so he literally ran into the ball that hit him in the head." Amazing.

John Candy improv'd this entire speech from HOME ALONE (1990) on the spot because his character "Gus Polinski" was a last minute addition to the film. Candy filmed all of his scenes in one 24 hour crunch, mainly as a favor to writer/producer John Hughes whom he had worked with twice before on two other films, and because the budget at that point couldn't afford him. Candy reportedly made only $414 for the role. When HOME ALONE director Chris Columbus worked with Candy again on the film ONLY THE LONELY one year later, he said Candy would sometimes joke about how much he earned versus how much the film grossed, which was almost $500,000 WW.

It has been now confirmed that Greg Biffle has died in a plane crash along with his family earlier today. I only met him briefly as we were getting coffee at an airfield that was set up for Hurricane Helene relief operations about a year ago now. He was out there helping those in need, in person, with his own aircraft. We spoke about what we had been seeing on the ground during relief operations and went our own way. He was completely down to earth and if you didn't know who he was would have just assumed he was like all the other volunteers that were there that day and not a famous wealthy man which says a lot about who he really was. We lost a great American today. RIP to Greg and his family 🇺🇸 #GregBiffle

The Gaudreau family is back in South Jersey after the tribute to Johnny at the Olympics when the men’s hockey team won the gold medal “They were saying they played for John. It was just so moving and touching. It was hard for Guy and myself and Meredith. When they brought the kids on the ice, it was so emotional and moving. With The Angry Birds Movie (2016) trending recently I’m surprised nobody hasn’t mentioned this scene yet and how quite emotional and beautifully executed it is that it completely works and makes you feel for the characters, this entire movie solos the entirety of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) and if anything I felt more emotional with this scene more than Peach reuniting with Rosalina which really says a lot about that movie and how painfully mediocre and stressful Galaxy Movie was and the best part this movie is actually takes the time to breathe and doesn’t overuse references or action scenes every few minutes to make it enjoyable and it also doesn’t have deep storytelling either and yet it still manages to be enjoyable.
