Who are the people who dislike Ocean’s Twelve? What’s their issue? Where the hell are they? I’d like a word. Because this movie thrives on so many levels, including & especially the ending. Steven Soderbergh is the only person qualified to direct these films- it’s his vision.

Richard Linklater’s Before Trilogy is up there with any of the best trilogies in modern Cinema. The Godfather, The Lord of the Rings, the original Star Wars trilogy all come to mind as some of Cinema’s best trilogies & the Before Trilogy should be mentioned in that very breath. On Linklater’s 65th birthday, if you haven’t seen any of these films, the time is now. 🎂

Brad Pitt’s candid interview with Esquire this week somehow led me back to Moneyball. Maybe it’s the fact that we’re in the middle of baseball season & things are heating up or maybe it’s just the fact that this might be the best film Pitt has ever been a part of - I don’t see a single flaw here. This is as good as sports films get.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s filmography is close to flawless. The reason I use the word “close” is because films like Don’t Look Up exist. It pains me to say that this remains one of the biggest disappointments of the decade for me, despite a cast loaded with actors I love. This movie’s humor never landed for me & the story was relatively boring. An unfortunate miss for Leo.

The Bourne Ultimatum is one of the best action films ever made. There, I said it. I like to think that all the things Matt Damon learned in playing Jason Bourne helped him on the set of The Odyssey. Seeing Damon’s physicality as Odysseus definitely reminded me of some of the things he pulled off as Bourne. It’s also another excuse to fire up the original Bourne trilogy.

What is the root of this? Kurosawa: When there is talk of humanity in Japan, everyone thinks of complex subjects and stories. However, whatever an ordinary human feels, we try to project on the screen in an honest way. That’s all. Interviewer: You were keen on American cinema… Kurosawa: Regarding American cinema, I could say that much better films were made in the past. Today’s American cinema provides the wrong service to the audience. Violence and car crashes are often seen. What pleasure is there in watching such scenes? Old American films expressed human problems quite well, but these days the American cinema has problems. There is no doubt that a film like 'Jurassic Park' (1993) is interesting, but there used to be more impressive films in the past. In contrast, films, like those of Kiarostami, touch the heart and are very beautiful. These new sci-fi, action films, are good but they are not cinema. Interviewer: In comparison to cinema as entertainment, how do you think Third World artistic cinema can attract a Western audience? Kurosawa: Civilization has poisoned humanity. The backbone of a good film is the filmmaker’s humane character. If we are not honest to ourselves, we will never be able to make decent films. Actually, it doesn’t mean that if a country is well off, it is necessarily capable of making good films. Just as they have exceptional works, they were also very distinguished in character. It was very easy to establish a cordial relationship with them, which is quite important. Sidney Lumet is a close friend of mine, and whenever we sit down to talk we never discuss cinema. We generally discuss trivial matters, social problems or our hobbies, and we quite enjoy it. Dune: Part 3 would literally need to be one of the best films I’ve ever seen in my life to somehow beat The Odyssey for the Oscar for Best Picture. Dune 3 would need to be historically great. And it might be! But the bar is so high. I’ve also never felt like The Academy has properly recognized Denis Villeneuve, whereas lately, Christopher Nolan has been the apple of the industry’s eye. All of which is to say that Nolan stands in the way of Denis’s chances at dancing with Oscar.
