Richard Linklater’s Before Trilogy is up there with any of the best trilogies in modern Cinema. The Godfather, The Lord of the Rings, the original Star Wars trilogy all come to mind as some of Cinema’s best trilogies & the Before Trilogy should be mentioned in that very breath. Leonardo DiCaprio’s filmography is close to flawless. The reason I use the word “close” is because films like Don’t Look Up exist. It pains me to say that this remains one of the biggest disappointments of the decade for me, despite a cast loaded with actors I love. This movie’s humor never landed for me & the story was relatively boring. An unfortunate miss for Leo.

The Bourne Ultimatum is one of the best action films ever made. There, I said it. I like to think that all the things Matt Damon learned in playing Jason Bourne helped him on the set of The Odyssey. Seeing Damon’s physicality as Odysseus definitely reminded me of some of the things he pulled off as Bourne. It’s also another excuse to fire up the original Bourne trilogy.

Dune: Part 3 would literally need to be one of the best films I’ve ever seen in my life to somehow beat The Odyssey for the Oscar for Best Picture. Dune 3 would need to be historically great. And it might be! But the bar is so high. I’ve also never felt like The Academy has properly recognized Denis Villeneuve, whereas lately, Christopher Nolan has been the apple of the industry’s eye. All of which is to say that Nolan stands in the way of Denis’s chances at dancing with Oscar.
