Steven Soderbergh said recently that his next film will feature a significant amount of AI. My initial, knee-jerk reaction is I hate this news. It feels beneath Soderbergh, a director I love. But…if anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt with AI, isn’t it at least Soderbergh?

Soderbergh’s spent his career pushing Cinema forward with technology. This man has explored different uses of tech in film for decades. For example, Soderbergh is renowned for being an early adopter of digital filmmaking. Shouldn’t we give him a shot at using AI at least?

Seeing you defend AI slop is beyond disappointing. If needed in any avenue of film, CGI should be used because it still requires an artist to create it.

Most people couldn’t tell you what AI is if you paid them. Everyone thinks it’s only used for face swapping and imitation art when its uses are far more commonplace. There are good and bad uses for AI. The issue we have is it’s unregulated at the moment.

No

No. Fuck that hack

Soderbored using Ai to complete shots is in line with him telling the actors to just add their own dialog, to do whatever they want. He’s a lazy filmmaker. This latest Ai confession solidifies that.

Agreed. Him and Fincher are the two old guard 90’s guys I could see experimenting with it.

no

It was only a matter of time until a big name did it to start to normalize it. I thought it would be Cameron, since that's probably his only hope to finish the Avatar films

Nope

You have a dozen tweets correctly lashing out again using generative AI in movies, you can’t seriously think that Soderbergh is above criticism for this! Slippery slope you should be consistent with your beliefs…

Technology is part of cinema. Like every other one, if well done, it's art; if not, it's a shitty movie like many we are already producing.

No he can fuck off

I told a gaffer friend of mine that “I feel like more a producer than director as I’m always cutting corners/costs/getting creative in budgets” and he told me when he was gaffing a Soderbergh movie in NYC Steven came in the lighting truck day one, and pointed ( or put post it notes, can’t remember) on lights saying “not using, not using, not gonna use“ - cut the package down greatly— saved the producer, likely himself, a bunch of money. Be Curious how he uses ai/cgi

It could be that the plot significantly includes a.i., but the movie doesn't use any & it's just a good statement to get people talking.. atleast i hope that's the case

No

The ignorance and pitchforks are clearly visible, and most people critical of AI labelling everything slop have not used tools or experienced the potential use cases. It is an augmentative tool. Cheap ideas make cheap content. Great ideas make great content. Technology always has that effect, imagine when the first book was printed… “oh no dear no, handwritten books are the only real books.”…

Let me guess: you thought autotune was the end of music.

No.

This a very nuanced take to have. Sadly you'll probably be ratio'd for having it

Soderbergh can do it

He has always experimented.

Sinners employed AI and it took 3 special effects teams in 3 countries to use it well

Yes him I trust.

Yes, but he’s also always been very experimental. He loves to test & prod notions of art. My guess is that, at the very least, it will be approached with a curiosity about art and how AI will/will not affect it. It’s a science/art project.

Nobody deserves the benefit of the doubt regarding Ai

He makes okay films indeed. Still no.
