He wouldn’t meet me. Then after Jaws came out, I thought I had a better chance because it became a huge hit that summer. He was shooting a movie around that time in 1975, and I had a reporter from The Washington Post following me for a profile. So I said, “Let’s go see if we can both meet Alfred Hitchcock.” I walked onto Hitchcock’s stage, and there he was with his back to me in a director’s chair. There was no way for him to know I was there. Then I noticed Hitchcock made a gesture with his hand, an assistant director came running over, Hitchcock whispered something, and the assistant director turned, looked right at me, walked over, and said, “Uh, you have to leave.” Whether Hitchcock saw my reflection in a mirror or somehow knew I was there, we were thrown off the set. And yes, I still wanted to have dinner with him. He’s a genius. I had nothing but questions for him.
