The most important first pitch ever

Ol' Dubya, like all presidents, made some mistakes. But in the days right after 9/11, he was at his absolute best. His stirring words at Ground Zero; and this moment at Yankee Stadium. He was a leader when we needed one badly. 🫡

I assume you know the story about Jeter telling him, "You've gotta throw it from the rubber, and don't bounce it." And that was a helluva throw while wearing a kevlar vest.

I lived on 135th in Harlem at the time. I swear I could hear the crowd roar from my terrace when that pitch connected. ⚾️

@Alyssafarah Showed my kids the 9/11 doc that was made by the French filmmakers following the NYPD around during 9/11. Followed that with W’s speech at ground zero and then the first pitch at Yankee Stadium. My kids immediately pick up on his leadership. “I didn’t know he was cool”. 🇺🇸

No matter what you think of him, for a POTUS to throw a perfect strike in this moment is badass.

For anyone too young to grasp this moment…President Bush honorably showed that as horrific as the attacks were, NOTHING would stop us from being us. For days, weeks, months we didn’t know if more attacks were coming…yet, he walked out at Yankee Stadium in front of thousands.

I was at that game. When the snipers came down through the stands, the crowd erupted in a chant of "Let's go snipers!".

This still hits pretty deep too.

I wish we could feel that unity again in our great nation. We have so much to be proud of and thankful for. Yes, the circumstances around that moment were unbelievably sad, but we have recovered and though we'll never forget those we lost, we live on and honor their memories.

I love hearing him tell the story of before he goes out and one player says, "Mr President, don't bounce it."

I still find this video tragedy in so many ways: Bush immediately becoming one of the most popular presidents in modern history due to the country rallying around him and Americans not knowing what was to come with the War On Terror domestically speaking.
