Chrono Trigger has some of my favorite video game music of all time

One of the most hauntingly beautiful tracks of all time.

So good Capcom straight up copied it for Breath of Fire 3.

This. Always thought this was so funny. A crazy homage in the same era.

By a LOT. My choice for 2nd:

This is one of my favorite tracks. Gorgeous song when that second movement hits. Here's an indie that's high on my list. It's synthwave, but it mimics Secret's howls through instruments. Melody hits at 1:50. Peak at 3:13.

@TheKostos It is a really good one but have you heard this? :)

@TheKostos It was crazy to get a RL homage in the same era.

no it's not the goat

Timeless track. One of the greats.

Pretty good.

YT is preventing me from listening, but I assume this is the Shadow Forest. This theme slaps HARD. One of the greats.

Same composer! Mitsuda does incredible work.

Indeed. And here's another he oversaw. Just a beautifully atmospheric track.

Octopath clears with ease I’m afraid.

YES 🤩

YES

Legend of Dragoon I think is the best in my opinion. That one is nice too though.

Always will be for me as well. Ever since I played Chrono Trigger as a child. First instance I feel where I was wowed by a gaming soundtrack, felt contemplative by nature and seeing games as an art form.

Funny you should say this, because Chrono left me contemplative too, despite not outwardly purporting to be a contemplative game. Trigger was the first game I played making me wonder what was possible in games, how deep things could go.

Yeah interesting huh🤧 its also how I feel with the donkey Kong country osts too where it is the most contemplative music I can think of but its for a platformer. It enhances the game a lot and CT is no different fr. And glad to hear Im not the only one that CT wonders kid me

Indeed. Fully agree. One way to evoke these moods is with 7th and 9th chords. They feel unresolved, ethereal, and dreamy. The Chrono series heavily uses them, but as you note, you also see them in DKC & 2 in Aquatic Ambience and Stickerbush Symphony.

100%! And oh! Thanks you for linking this. Idk how I missed this but love the music love here, definitely feel the passion and knowledge with your music lingo

Cheers! Thank you so much. Really appreciate the kind words.

Ofc ofc! Always love seeing appreciation on game music and other kinds🤝

Yup. Best covers to my memory. First to Steven Morris and Soundole.

Zelda does forests the best.

They are solid af.

I still think "What the Forest Taught Me" from Secret of Mana is the best forest theme in JRPGs

The SNES mana games had such awesome music. I'm literally listening to Splash Hop (Trials) now.

My ex and I went on a date at a nearby state park during peak fall foliage, and I played her "What the Forest Taught Me" on my phone because it was playing in my head the entire time

This definitely one of them for sure

The bass is so, so good in this. Chrono Trigger has some of the most melodic bass in VGM.😍 Another great forest theme? Twilight Princess with it's hypnotic dissonance...

The 7th chords in Sacred Grove are so impactful. They borrow directly from Ocarina's iconic opening, and then blend it with Ocarina's Lost Woods theme to evoke a wave of nostalgic emotion, reimagined.

this forest almost isn't big enough for it, tho

The bass is bassing so hard

The bass does so much work in this song.

The arrangement they did for the Melodies Across Time CD was incredible! It's exactly how I would've arranged it! 😊

I still need to listen to this version. I don't think I have!

Just an unreal soundtrack especially on the SNES soundchip, and what's even more insane is that there were games about as good or better with it in places, like the underwater theme in DK

Aquatic Ambience is a god-tier track.

Add some trees

So mysterious

Forests are RPG sandboxes where anything is possible. They reflect the mystery and unfettered potential of fantasy itself.

Gah, I am so overdo on another CT run, I might have to force in a replay this year.

Same, man. It has been far too long.

do do do~ do do do~ do do-do do do do-do-do-do do~ do-do do do~ 20 years later and we all still remember it XD

Objectively, "Rak'tika Greatwood" from Final Fantasy XIV is the best. But this one is really good.

It is both a shame it wasn’t used more, and a blessing. Made it that much more special I think.

Agreed. A timeless track composed for such a small, insignificant area. It enhances the mystique.

Sim!

Alltime

Yup.

Suikoden and Octopath Traveler have some beautiful woodland themes too

Indeed they do. My Forest Home still gets me, among others.

Too bad the area is very small.

disparado

It really is

It's remarkable how beautiful this theme is, given how small and unimportant of an area it covers. Wonderful track.

Insane ...

If I may... I enjoy this one...

I have really been meaning to play this game. This is a lovely track.

It’s pretty good, but I don’t know if it’s better than the theme from link to the past

Oh, now that's a dark horse in this race. Love the energy of the pick. Lovely track.

Chrono Trigger has the best song for every single area, event, fight and cutscene, this game is just amazing

it’s fantastic
