“Daydream Believer” was originally slated to be the B-side of a Michael Nesmith-led single built around “Love Is Only Sleeping,” but a last-minute issue involving the European masters led to the song being promoted to the A-side instead. Released in 1967, it became a huge hit, spending four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (The Monkees’ last American chart-topper) and later reaching #5 on the UK Singles Chart. Included on The Birds, The Bees & the Monkees (1968), the track is often noted as one of the few recordings from that era to feature all four Monkees together, at a time when the group was increasingly splintering in the studio.
