Nate Bittle is joining the Toronto Raptors on an Exhibit-10 deal. This is a long-term bet on development but I'd like to make a case for why Nate has a better shot to make it than most 7 footers who went undrafted. 1. He's smart. This doesn't just mean he's a mature, level-headed 23 year-old with good habits and work ethic, but he's also quite intelligent on the court. He processes feedback well, makes timely reads, and picks his spots pretty well. Apart from a few unforced turnovers and some foul trouble earlier in his college career, I'm not worried about his basketball brain. 2. He can shoot. And I mean shoot shoot. Not big man shoot. He has excellent touch indicators, and the shot should go in more than it actually does. Repeatable, high and quick release. Pulls with an abundance of sureness and confidence. 3. Improvement arc. His role expanded with the Ducks through the years and he just found a way to get better. There's no quantum leaps here, nor will 1 be coming. But he absolutely knows who he is as a player. 4. He can really pass. Not exceptionally. But he at least projects to be as good a passer as Jakob Poeltl, which is a huge win. 5. True 7-footer with a 7'6 wingspan. Gets long and big around the basket. Huge standing reach and plays with it. 6. Got stronger. Way too many people assume Nate is 7'1 215. Spoke to someone close to the source close to the situation who said he was closer to 7'1 245 and got up to 255 by the G League combine. That's BIG. 7. He's a drop big. Yes. But he's good at it. And I think his lateral quickness is better than people think it is. 8. Wingspan. He measured out with the largest wingspan in this draft at 7'6, tied with 12th overall pick Aday Mara. However, his Height (7'0) to Wingspan (7'6) differential of 6 inches is the biggest of any player in this draft north of 6'11. 9. He's got a nasty streak. He protects the rim, he goes up strong. Did he at times get bumped off his spot? Yes. But he competes man. 10. His athleticism concerns are over-emphasized. A 26 inch vertical matters way less when you're this big. By no means is this a big vertical lob threat who jumps out of the gym, but he rolls well, rolls hard, finishes well and has excellent touch on a handful of replicable post moves. For the Raptors, if ever he develops, he's as good if not a better bet than Brendan Carlsen. Same size, but a couple of years younger and a much more productive bet against better competition. Not to mention, he's a better defender passer and rebounder than Carlsen. I think he'll eventually work somewhere. Not spectacular. But 7'1 depth bigs who have this much game are a rare find.

Can you question the money/assets? Sure. That’s fair. But when people start naming 10–15 centers they’d rather have and acting like Kessler is just some overpaid big body, that’s where I have to ask, are we watching the same player? Because on film, Kessler is a legitimate defensive anchor. He has strong post defense, absorbs contact well, keeps his chest square, and contests with verticality instead of constantly reaching. He plays with his hands high, makes himself huge at the rim, and has great timing as a shot blocker. What stands out most is his defensive IQ. He reads pick-and-roll actions well, moves his feet better than people give him credit for, and can stay attached long enough against smaller forwards/guards to recover back into the play. He tracks the ball, doesn’t quit on possessions, and gives you real chase-down/rim protection value. Strong, athletic build at 5'11" and 193-lbs with plenty of natural strength. Stands fairly tall in the box with his knees slightly bent and a tight base with a slightly open front side. NO visits, NO Bible sessions, NO gym, NO pool, NO laptop, NO emails, NO CD player, NO DVD player, NO daily chaplaincy visits, NO daily NHS doctor or nurse visits, NO 3 hours out of my cell, NO 2 hours with friends and family, NO 2 hours 45 mins painting and decorating, NO 4 hours of phone time every day, I WAS NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO ATTEND CHURCH DURING EASTER. Tommy was adamant that he would rather go to prison for contempt of court than to take down his video about a schoolboy. Whether you like it or not, this was his decision. Of course, Tommy fans will say that he should not be locked up (despite him pleading guilty to contempt of court)... But please do not pretend that he is languishing down the block! The man is enjoying more leisure time than most of us on the outside who are working full-time jobs. His argument is that automating the full cycle raises both the count and the quality of experiments, starting with ML research itself. Transformer Lab's Primus is built around a similar premise, with the research question as the only thing a human provides. It runs for roughly a day and returns a complete paper. The loop runs in six stages: - Literature review: reads and synthesizes existing work before designing anything - Experiment design: scopes the study, picks models, datasets, and metrics - Provisioning: brings up GPUs and schedules the jobs - Execution: runs training and evaluation, catches failures, and retries - Analysis: checks results against the design it committed to - Writeup: produces the paper with methodology, findings, and caveats Each stage on its own is usually a routine task, since agents already do all of them. But holding them together across a day of wall-clock time wasn't solved yet, since a crash after a few hours invalidates everything after it. That is a scheduling and state problem more than a model problem. I tested Primus on a quantization research question, asking it to compare INT8 and FP16 on a small open-source vision model and pick the better tradeoff for consumer GPU deployment. The image set it first downloaded was a compressed copy, and the compression was quietly inflating accuracy by about 2.9 points on all three models, so it went back and rebuilt every result on the original photos. It then noticed its own timing was unfair, since running the two precisions one after the other favoured INT8 at three of the four batch sizes, and switched to alternating them in short blocks. The result I would not have thought to look for is that INT8 costs ResNet-50 only 0.05 points of accuracy, which looks free, while quietly changing the answer on 4.3 percent of images. To know whether 4.3 percent was even a lot, it first built the same model twice in FP16 and measured how much two identical builds disagree with each other, which is 0.14 percent. Nobody has published that baseline, so there was never anything to compare against.
