G20 SUMMIT DAY 2: CRITICAL ROAD CLOSURES Today is the final day of the summit, meaning high-volume VIP movements are expected as delegates depart. The rolling closures are active, and motorists are advised that highways and main arterials will be completely closed intermittently to allow convoys to pass. This causes sudden, standstill traffic for 30–60 minutes at a time. The most critical times for these closures today are: * Morning: 07:00 – 10:00 * Evening: 15:00 – 20:00 We can confirm that specific closures will be in effect for today, Sunday: * Nasrec Precinct (Summit Venue): * Nasrec Road: Closed between Rand Show Road and Shaft 17 Road. * Rand Show Road: Northern portion closed between the N1 and Nasrec Road. * Golden Highway: Closed between Rand Show Road and Soweto Highway. * Booysens Reserve Road: Closed near Crownwood Road. Sandton and Rosebank: Expect disruptions on Grayston Drive, Rivonia Road, Maude Street, Oxford Road, and Jan Smuts Avenue as dignitaries move between their accommodations. Weather services have issued warnings for severe thunderstorms in the Gauteng region today. The combination of slippery roads, poor visibility, and heavy G20 congestion significantly increases the risk of accidents. We urge drivers to maintain a safe following distance and keep their headlights on at all times. As of this morning, no new massive highway blockages have been reported, but the network is extremely fragile. Any minor accident will cause gridlock due to the existing G20 pressure. Motorists are advised to avoid the highways (N1, M1, N12, R21, R24) if possible, and they can use alternatives such as: * Roodepoort: Use Beyers Naudé Drive, Christiaan De Wet, or Ontdekkers Roads. * Sandton/North: Use smaller side streets parallel to Rivonia/Oxford (though these will still be busy). * South: Use Chris Hani Road, Main Reef Road, or Soweto Highway, (where open) to bypass the Nasrec lockdown. There is something about running on the road that a treadmill can never teach you. The road doesn't care if you're tired, if it's humid, if you've had a long day at work, or if you didn't sleep well. It simply demands you to keep moving. During last two years, I've run on empty roads before sunrise, sometimes on streets filled with traffic, flyovers that tested my strength, and stretches where the only sound I could hear was of me losing breath. Every run on the road has been different but every time I run on road, it reminds me that running is far more mental than physical. When you run on the road, you can't control everything. There are potholes, traffic lights, barking dogs, unexpected distractions, humidity, rain, headwinds. You have to adapt instead of complain. You must stop waiting for perfect conditions because progress rarely comes on perfect days. Road running has also taught me patience. You don't become a marathoner in a week. Every long run, every early alarm, every extra kilometer is an investment. There are no shortcuts, you need to be consistent. The biggest challenge is never the distance. It's the voice inside your head that tells you to stop. There were times when my mind wanted to quit but every time I chose to keep going, I finished the target only to feel more stronger, not just physically, but mentally. One thing I love about running on roads is that they constantly remind you to stay present. You have to watch where you step, be aware of traffic, adjust your pace, and make decisions every second. Running on road rewards focus and punishes distraction. It's a lesson that extends well beyond running. Another lesson is that the most challenging routes usually offer the greatest results. The steep climbs while running on bridges make your legs stronger. The long runs build the deepest confidence. Running on roads has also taught me that discomfort is temporary, consistency beats motivation, and growth begins the moment you choose not to quit. The roads of Karachi are more than training ground for me. They've seen me on my happiest mornings and my toughest days. These streets have quietly become my therapist, my teacher, and my coach. They've listened when I had no one to talk to, challenged me when I wanted to quit, and reminded me that no matter how chaotic life gets, the only way forward is one step at a time.

May this young man's Soul Rest in Peace. The carnage continues due to unprecedented levels of greed, dereliction of duty, and lack of accountability. The funds are actually there and have been provided over the past decade. The Ministry of Finance Ministry of Finance has released about UGX 100 Billion since 2019 for a Department of Government whose main responsibility and objective should be prevention of road crashes. These funds have been spent on activities with very minimal impact on road safety. This information has been shared with IGG, Office of the Auditor General Uganda, Criminal Investigations Directorate-UPF. How do you explained the death of a young man in a fatal road crash that caused the incineration of the vehicle which he was driving? He must have been driving in one of the best motor vehicles in this country given the wealth of his family. He was driving a motor vehicle which probably had good safety features on a smooth road without pot holes. It is easy to draw conclusions like he was speeding, he was fatigued, he lost control of his motor vehicle, he made errors, e.t.c. Whereas all that may be true, did he deserve to die in such a gruesome way for those errors in judgement? The answer is a BIG NO. The truth is government failed him in so many ways. At the center of modern day road safety management is recognition that errors made by road users (drivers, motorcyclists, cyclist and pedestrians) MUST NOT lead to their demise. Here is a situation he found himself in: Concrete Barriers on a road that encourages high speed. Who has the onus to remove this hazard? Government. I could have perished in the same circumstances a few years back before the completion of the KEE on the way to the Airport. It was a rainy early morning at about 5:00am and I drove through barriers which were made of plastic. So why were these not made of plastic? Was there a provision for lighting on that section? If not, it should have been there. This is what we mean when we say roads should be forgiving. Apart from their design, road sides are the major reference here. The road should have forgiven him for this error if it had plastic reflective barriers. These kind of barriers would have caught his attention and he would have stopped his car instead of killing him. Were the traffic lights functional? Why was there no hazard signage or warning of any sort since there were barriers in middle of the road? This section of the road is built as an expressway and as such encourages speeding especially at any time beyond midnight. There are no traffic calming measures in place yet it is freely used by pedestrians and Boda-Bodaz like any other city road. Roads are supposed to be designed and constructed bearing in mind the activities that take place around them (Land Use). Interventions to control speed must be implemented if there is a high volume of different road users. They would have got his attention and he would not have died. A glaring example of contractors that do not care about road safety is on the section of Kampala-Masaka in the swampy section of Lwera. The Concrete Barriers are there and in places where they are not, there is nothing preventing a motor vehicle falling off into the swamp. Not even a rope. UNTIL THE DAY WHEN THE LEADERSHIP OF THIS COUNTRY ACCEPTS THAT ROAD CRASHES ARE PREVENTABLE AND PARLIAMENT STARTS DEMANDING ACCOUNTABILTY ON ROAD SAFETY, THIS CARNAGE WILL CONTINUE. ACCEPTING THERE IS A PROBLEM IS THE FIRST STEP TO SOLVING IT OR MANAGING IT. TOMORROW IT MIGHT BE ME OR YOU. LETS STOP PAYING LIP SERVICE TO UGANDANS ESPECIALLY ALL THOSE FAMILIES THAT LOSE LOVED ONES IN THIS MESS OF GREED AND LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY. Blue-Green Algae at Red Bud Isle☠️🐶 Austin, TX - Austin Watershed Protection staff have observed thick mats of blue-green algae, some of which may be toxic, notably near Red Bud Isle on Lady Bird Lake and at Walsh Boat Landing on Lake Austin. Samples were collected at all six monitoring sites on the lakes for testing. At this time of year, blue-green algae mats may be present in other parts of either lake and our creeks. Community members should be cautious and avoid contact with algae. They should keep dogs away from water with algae mats. The mats usually look like dark blobs floating on the surface and can be mixes of different kinds of algae. They may be mixed in with aquatic vegetation. As the weather continues to heat up, conditions for algae will become more favorable, and we expect to see more in our waterways. Assess Before You Enter Waterways If any of the following conditions are present, stay out of the water. They could indicate reduced water quality. •Algae along the shoreline •Stagnant, warm or murky water •Scum or surface film. In addition, do not enter the water if there has been rain in the past three days. After Entering the Water •Do not drink water directly from natural water bodies. •Avoid contact with algae. •Rinse skin, hair, and animal fur thoroughly after contact with water. •Do not allow pets to lick their fur before rinsing them off. If you or your pet experiences sudden, unexplained illness after swimming, contact your medical provider or veterinarian immediately. Residents are encouraged to report suspected human or animal illnesses related to algae using the City’s online reporting form. The mats of blue-green algae present at Red Bud Isle are similar in appearance to conditions in May and June in previous years. For the past five years, we have applied lanthanum-modified clay to manage sediment phosphorus in an effort to reduce the growth of algae as part of a $1.5 million pilot program. This year is a control year with no application so we can evaluate the effectiveness of the pilot program and whether it is beneficial to continue investing public funds at the previous level. Algae is not the only risk when spending time on Austin’s waterways. Natural water bodies can contain algae, bacteria, parasites, and other hazards. *Austin Watershed Protection
