Winds are rapidly increasing across Boulder County, Colorado. Gusts up to 50 mph are being reported at the base of the foothills, and a ground stop is currently in effect at Denver International Airport due to strong winds. The strongest winds are still expected west of the Highway 93 corridor, where conditions will remain most hazardous.

The Cottonwood Fire in Utah is making a sustained run this afternoon. Extreme fire weather has moved into the fire area, with sustained winds of 20-25MPH. This footage from Mariah Hicks shows how receptive the fuels are, and the effect of the low RH combined with high winds. Many fires across the west are bracing for the long duration Red Flag conditions settling in.

This is what firefighters are up against outside Reno. The vegetation around the #HawkFire is so dry you can pick it up and pulverize it in your hands. Add low humidity and increasing afternoon winds, and you have conditions primed for wildfire growth. The National Weather Service expects humidity to fall sharply this afternoon as southwest winds increase, with gusts potentially reaching 20–25 mph. Officials continue to report 0% containment, with hundreds of firefighters and additional resources working the fire. This dry brush tells the story. It doesn’t take much for fire to find fuel here. We’re outside Reno with continuing coverage on The Weather Channel.
