Northern California stays pretty much consistently unsettled the next several days but southern areas get a nice break. Looks like another big push of moisture impacts the whole state Sunday into Monday.

We are about to see one of the largest rain events that’s ever been triggered in the continental United States by a Pacific Hurricane. After making landfall in Baja California, the saturated remnants of former-Category 5 Hurricane Polo are going to inject a massive conveyor belt of deep, tropical moisture up through NW Mexico and into the U.S. South-Central Texas could be at the epicenter of the event, with isolated rain totals potentially reaching up to a FOOT this week.

TEXAS FLOODS-Here’s a radar loop from the main event. From Thursday afternoon, July 3rd, through Sunday evening, July 6th. A leftover “plume” of tropical moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry surged north into the state, in combination with elevated moisture from the eastern Pacific from Hurricane Flossie. A shortwave trough emerged from the northwest along with some upper spin from the Gulf, and aided the formation of an MCV over central Texas. Starting late Wednesday, a funnel of this tropical moisture began feeding into the Hill Country, and along with the approaching shortwave, fueled the development of the MCV or (mesoscale convective vortex). This “spin” or the MCV, continued to produce widespread tropical downpours and thunderstorms overnight into Friday morning, July 4th. A burst of low-level air and moisture transport, what’s called the LLJ (Low-level jet) also continued to funnel moisture in to this MCV and continued storms overnight. This was where the bulk of the flooding occurred, and filled downstream rivers and tributaries. Each subsequent day brought bursts of convectively-driven showers and storms that would further exacerbate the flooding situation, on top of what already fell. This continues today, with more showers and storms forming as we speak. #txwx #TexasFloods

Incredible satellite animation showing the flow of air/clouds over one of the Channel Islands of California (specifically, Santa Cruz Island). The airflow is disrupted by the island and forms a pair of huge, persistent counter-rotating vortices that look just spectacular! Also lots of waves, ripples, and other cool dynamics easily visible.... Fascinating loop for enjoyers of air and water vapor!

I’m observing an exponential increase in robust storm activity as the Pacific jet extension stream strengthens over the next 72 - 96 hours. The atmospheric conditions are growing with higher confidence showing across EU1 and CPC now satellite view showing the full display of these storms for December 4 - 10, 2025. Friday, September 18, 2026, 4:47 AM: The most recent EU1 and GFS 6Z models indicate early indications of tropical activity in the eastern Pacific is developing, with a potential positioning and axis of the Gulf of Alaska low in the Southwest U.S. around Monday September 28 to Wednesday September 30, 2026 is closely being analyzed. Especially since we have sea surface temperatures of 78 to 82° across Southern California down to Ensenada, Mexico due to our very strong El Niño continues to get stronger. Disclaimer: It is important to note that the presence of a tropical teleconnection does not necessarily imply a direct threat of a tropical system to Southern California. Drawing parallels to previous weather events, such as the interaction between the Gulf of Alaska low and remnants of Marie which brought increased moisture to parts of LA County over Labor Day weekend, I am closely monitoring this new weather situation. The specific areas of Southern California that may be affected remain uncertain at this time. This will be evolving depending on the position again on the positioning of the Gulf of Alaska low. Jaw-dropping satellite and radar imagery of Super Typhoon Bavi as it barrels toward the southern portion of the Mariana Islands, including Guam. Notice on radar the abundance of tornadic supercells in the western semicircle of the storm...this is quite unusual for a Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclone, as they're usually found in the eastern semicircle.
