One reason tobacco use declined is that it became socially stigmatized. In many other areas, though, society has moved in the opposite direction, trying to destigmatize almost everything. I sometimes joke that if we had simply destigmatized smoking and been kinder to smokers, we might have eliminated smoking altogether. Or if the anti-drinking and driving movement had handed out free beers, destigmatized impaired driving, and created spaces to do it without stigma, they would have successfully reduced drunk driving. Sadly they instead went with using stigma + judgment and look what happened. But of course, what happened is that we stigmatized drunk driving and smoking, and the result was that far fewer people drive drunk and smoke cigarettes. That suggests stigma can sometimes be an effective tool when it’s used carefully. The harder question is whether, and how, similar tools can be applied to other harmful behaviors—like drug abuse—where the consequences are severe, including becoming the kind of person whose actions are so destructive that they risk losing their children. Nick Saban was asked a question after practice once. His response was 70 seconds of gold on what it takes to be successful in life. Here’s Saban on the Illusion of Choice: “These guys, they all think they have this illusion of choice. Like I can do whatever I want to do. “You have a younger generation now that doesn’t always get told no. They don’t get told this is exactly how you need to do it. So they have this illusion that they have all these choices. “But the fact of the matter is, if you want to be good you don’t really have a lot of choices. It takes what it takes. You have to do what you have to do to be successful. “You have to make the choices and decisions to have the discipline and the focus to the process of what you need to do to accomplish your goals. “All these guys that think they have a lot of choices are sadly mistaken. As we all have done with our own children, they learn these lessons of life as they get older. “Sometimes the best way to learn is from the mistakes you make, even though we all hate to see them have to make them, and we don’t condone it when they do.” – I’ve studied Saban for 12+ years, and the Illusion of Choice is one of the most powerful concepts I’ve come across. Some key takeaways: 1. Excellence has a price. We can complain about that, but it’s a fact of life. 2. Most people don’t want to pay that price. They just haven’t admitted it to themselves. 3. Saying you want to be excellent is easy. Becoming excellent is hard. 4. There may not be one way to become great, but there are very few. And they all have discipline and consistency in common. 5. Every action we take is a choice. We’re choosing to make progress, or we’re not. 6. The formula for becoming successful: Your Daily Choices x Time. It’s simple, but we make it complicated. 7. Sometimes we learn more by making the wrong choices. Reflect on them, pull out the lessons and move on. 8. You have to choose what you do every day. Don’t follow your feelings. NEW DOCUMENTARY: "The Censorship Files" How much would you pay to protect your freedom? by Leighton 明 Woodhouse & Michael Shellenberger One year ago, we and other journalists gained access to the Twitter Files. What we discovered shocked us. Not only were highly partisan and ideological individuals within Twitter censoring people for holding views with which they disagreed, they were often doing so on behalf of US government officials and contractors with the FBI, CIA, and Department of Homeland Security. And so, one year later, we are happy to announce a new, full-length documentary film, “The Censorship Files.” You can see the trailer above. The film, made by Leighton Woodhouse and Jonah Markowitz, will bring you inside the Twitter Files and the race to the Supreme Court, which will hear the Missouri v. Biden censorship case early next year. Today we must ask you a personal question: what price would you put on your freedom? Many of us tell ourselves that freedom is priceless: we would sacrifice everything, die even, to protect our freedoms and keep America a free nation. Even if we weren’t willing to die or go to prison for our nation, we would make a significant financial investment to protect it. We are asking you to make a far more modest payment: less than $9/month, or about half the cost of a Netflix subscription. A subscription to Public is an investment in our investigative reporting, our free speech campaigning, and the final production and distribution of “The Censorship Files,” a film that will change how Americans think about free speech. We believe $9/month is a tiny investment to pay to ensure that, in the future, you can read what you want to read, watch the programs you want to watch, and voice your opinions. “The Censorship Files” will be a landmark film in educating younger Americans, who are more censorial than their elders, about America’s remarkable history of strong free speech protections. They will learn about the Civil Rights movement, the right of the New York Times to publish “the Pentagon Papers,” and the right even of pro-Nazi and pro-terrorism activists to march freely through America’s streets. “The Censorship Files” will reveal the origins and scope of the Censorship Industrial Complex, its leaders and architects, and its victims of censorship, from moms sharing stories about the Covid vaccine’s side effects on their children to two of the world’s foremost experts on the Covid response, Harvard’s Martin Kulldorff and Stanford’s Jay Bhattacharya. Finally, we will use “The Censorship Files” to build a new free speech movement in America, city by city, campus by campus, from the grassroots up. Because if we can’t persuade America’s youth to support free speech, then the First Amendment is just some words on a piece of paper. We can’t save the First Amendment without you. We can’t even finish “The Censorship Files” without you. This is not complicated. We need more paid subscribers. We need more than 10% of our subscribers to contribute thirty cents daily. If we could get 30% of our free subscribers to support our movement, I believe that we would have a fighting chance to save our first freedom and the other pillars of democratic civilization along with it. One year ago, we didn’t even know we lived in a heavily censored society. Today, we have ripped back the veil of the Censorship Industrial Complex and are on the cusp of defunding and dismantling it. Such a process will take years but won’t take a decade. It may even happen much more quickly than that, depending on the actions of the Supreme Court and Congress. What’s certain is that we can’t do it without our paid subscribers — and we don’t want to do it without our unpaid ones. This is where youth sports often get it backwards. Kids don’t need more sport-specific training. They need more athletic development. Somewhere along the way, we convinced ourselves that earlier specialization meant better outcomes. More reps of the same skills. More drills. More structure. More pressure. But strong, fast, coordinated, resilient athletes are not built by narrowing movement early. They’re built by expanding it. Before worrying about a child’s shooting form, throwing mechanics, or position-specific skills, we should be asking: Can they run, jump, stop, and change direction? Can they balance, rotate, climb, crawl, and fall safely? Can they move with rhythm, coordination, and confidence? Athletic development is the foundation that sport skills are built on—not the other way around. Speed, strength, power, and durability don’t magically appear because a kid played one sport year-round. They come from movement variety, free play, and exposure to different physical challenges across multiple planes and environments. Introducing the “Get” action in basketball to lacrosse! The “Get” is a 2man action where a player passes the ball to another player and sprints to go “Get” it back on a handoff. This action has similar concepts and reads to pick and roll, but the picker is actually the ball handler! In lacrosse, we have been experimenting with Gets because it creates so many interesting situations and reads for the players. The way we teach it in small sided games is to have one offensive player declare “I’m shut” and the defense has to face-guard him. From there we pick for the shut off player trying to spring them free for the Get. The ball handler has to engage and control their defender, anticipating the shut player trying to get open. The shut player can backdoor if being overplayed towards the get (rejecting the get), receive a flip, or continue curling around the ball getting open for a late pass. The ball handler can feed the reject, flip the ball, or fake the flip to attack the goal or make a late pass to the shut payer curling to the goal. I’ve seen examples of this run in men’s and women’s DI lacrosse at Ohio State and Northwestern, respectively and I’ve run this myself when I was coaching HS girls lacrosse. You will also see on this reel a sick application for Gets vs. a common big-little invert coverage where the short stick doesn’t go behind with his man and plays “Safety” in front of the net. Gets are fun for the players, are incredible for teaching your players 2man game on and off ball, dealing with double teams, and creativity with passing, and can be used to score goals. Today, I taught my primary 2 kids the principle of the telescope using Galilean optics focused on how light waves gets into the aperture, meet at a focal point and produce a magnified image visible to the eye. At the end of the class, they had the chance to assemble binoculars and test them. This will inspire my 8 year old kids to be curious, to wonder about what is in space, what they might discover if they look far and wide, and also the hidden world of microorganism. In addition, this lesson can simply raise their interest about starting factories and companies that will build binoculars and telescopes to sell to Nigerian companies, labs and schools. In summary, they are currently getting appropriately ready for the growth of their country, economy and personal selves while our children in Nigeria are busy learning a colonial national anthem while memorizing the multiplication table. It’s not late. Here is how we can do this in Nigeria: 1. All children of government and elected officials must attend public schools. It should be an impeachable offense for their children to study overseas, and all public schools must be treated equal according to the law. 2. Ban all private schools for 15 years. 3. All teachers must have at least a masters degree, and be paid not less than 500K naira a month. 4. Scholarship for rural teachers education in university, free housing, free food for 10 years. Rural education should be focused on agricultural technology and healthcare. 5. President, governors and lawmakers should be paid minimum wage. 6. Public hanging of all convicted public officials and judicial workers for corruption (20k naira and above) while the colonial national anthem plays on a Jumbotron right next to the gallows. Please help me understand something. I still do not understand why Africans should mobilise themselves to support a South American team over an African team, South Africa. The fact that there have been xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks in South Africa by a minority of South Africans against fellow Africans does not necessarily mean we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Emotional reactions rarely produce meaningful solutions. In moments like these, I believe it is important to reflect and ask ourselves, what would Julius Nyerere have said? Would Nyerere have responded to Afrophobia by supporting Mexico against an African team? What would Kwame Nkrumah have said? More importantly, what would Nelson Mandela have said? It is important to understand that when someone does something wrong, and you respond by doing something similar, you risk becoming what you are criticising. But when someone mistreats you and you respond with maturity, principle and love, you break the cycle of toxicity. People can then clearly see the difference between the two of you. If you choose to fight a pig in the mud, both of you end up covered in mud, and from a distance it becomes difficult to tell the difference. Sometimes the most powerful response is not retaliation, but demonstrating the values you wish others would embrace. These are simply my reflections. People are free to support whichever team they want. However, choosing a team solely because of the xenophobic and Afrophobic actions of a minority group in South Africa, and then treating the entire South African nation as if it is united with that minority, does not strike me as the best path towards African unity. If we truly believe in Pan-Africanism, then we must be careful not to judge millions of people by the actions of a few. Otherwise, we risk reinforcing the very divisions that we claim to oppose. And to my African brothers and sisters who have large social media platforms and are followed by millions of people across different media platforms, as I am, we have a responsibility to be measured in what we say. We must use our influence to guide people towards solutions rather than inflame the very problems we claim to be trying to solve. Leadership is not about amplifying anger, resentment or division. It is about encouraging reflection, dialogue and understanding. Our words carry weight, and with that influence comes a duty to build bridges, not burn them. If we genuinely want a more united Africa, then we must be careful not to deepen existing wounds for applause or engagement. We should be helping people find common ground and practical solutions rather than accentuating the very challenges we are trying to overcome.

The three literature search agents (Crow, Falcon, and Owl) have benchmarked superhuman performance. Our agents also use a variety of factors to distinguish source quality, so that they don’t end up relying on low-quality papers or pop-science sources. Today, we are launching the first publicly available AI Scientist, via the FutureHouse Platform. Our AI Scientist agents can perform a wide variety of scientific tasks better than humans. We are releasing three superhuman AI Scientist agents today, each with their own specialization: A general-purpose agent (Crow); An agent to automate literature reviews (Falcon); and An agent to answer the question “Has anyone done X before” (Owl). We are also releasing an experimental agent, Phoenix, that has access to a wide variety of tools for planning experiments in chemistry. More on that below. The three literature search agents (Crow, Falcon, and Owl) have benchmarked superhuman performance. They also have access to a large corpus of full scientific texts, which means that you can ask them more detailed questions about experimental protocols and study limitations that general-purpose web search agents, which usually only have access to abstracts, might miss. Our agents also use a variety of factors to distinguish source quality, so that they don’t end up relying on low-quality papers or pop-science sources. Finally, and critically, we have an API, which is intended to allow researchers to integrate our agents into their workflows. Phoenix is an experimental project we put together recently just to demonstrate what can happen if you give the agents access to lots of scientific tools. It is not better than humans at planning experiments yet, and it makes a lot more mistakes than Crow, Falcon, or Owl. We want to see all the ways you can break it! The agents we are releasing today cannot yet do all (or even most!) aspects of scientific research autonomously. However, as we show in the video, you can already use them to generate and evaluate new hypotheses and plan new experiments way faster than before. Internally, we also have dedicated agents for data analysis, hypothesis generation, protein engineering, and more, and we plan to launch these on the platform in the coming months as well. Within a year or two, it is easy to imagine that the vast majority of desk work that scientists do today will be accelerated with the help of AI agents like the ones we are releasing today. If Matt Walsh has been looking and sounding a little stiff and shrill lately, it's probably because he is not able to sit comfortably. This is due to the Big Hand, which had to be inserted fairly deep so that it could move his mouth well enough to create the appropriate noises. The appropriate noises, in this case, being "you have offered no individual solution". Note that word, "individual". The Big Hand is very keen to slip that word into the premises of any debate, lest the discussion turn to solutions that involve collective action. The Big Hand does not want you to discuss collective action, because collective action might actually end up changing the status quo. It is, in fact, transparently obvious that nothing else will. No detailed examination of the problem is required. We need only look at who has the problem. A problem that a few individuals have is a personal problem, requiring a personal solution. A problem that a whole society has is a political problem, requiring a political solution. The problem we have is slave labor. Why is this a problem? It's certainly not a problem for the Big Hand which is moving Matt Walsh's mouth. It's not a problem for the boomers, who need... well, want... cheap workers for the business they own. (Businesses they were able to start or buy because their own labor, in their younger years, was highly compensated.) But it is a problem for them. They just don't realize it, because right all they see is the cheap labor. The bad consequences come along later. Slave labor destroys empires. How? Why? Well, what is a slave? In the political sense, a slave is a worker who cannot participate in the free market, because he is constrained by physical force. He cannot sell his labor to the highest bidder, and therefore he cannot negotiate. He must take what he is given. A literal slave cannot find a higher bidder to sell his labor to, because his employer is legally allowed to use force to make him stay. An prisoner in a labor program cannot find a higher bidder to sell his labor to, because he cannot go where other employers are. An indentured servant cannot find a higher bidder to sell his labor to, because the state will use force on him to compel him to complete his contract. A work visa immigrant cannot find a higher bidder to sell his labor to, because if he quits or is fired, he will be banned for the economy altogether, and must return to where he came from. That's what a slave is. So what is a free market? A free market is an economy where all actors are free from forcible constraint on their economic choices. Obviously, no market is totally free — you're not allowed to start an assassination service, and if you were, it could be used to constrain the economic freedom of others. But nations prosper when their markets are as free as possible, and fail when they are not. When you introduce slavery, whether it is called slavery, or slipped in the back door under some softer name, you destroy the free market. It is impossible for a free worker to economically compete with a slave without becoming a slave himself. Because a slave cannot negotiate, and must take what he is unilaterally given, a free worker must be more expensive until and unless he accepts what a slave receives. And what a slave receives is unilaterally set by his employer. Where slavery exists, a free worker is left with three options: 1. Take what a slave takes, and be treated as a slave is treated, thereby becoming equivalent to a slave. 2. Be unemployed, and subsist through government handouts, charity, or crime. 3. Become an entrepreneur, and own slaves rather than being one... if he can. If he succeeds in ascending to the business owner class, he will become a slaver himself. He will have no choice. If other businesses employ slaves to reduce labor costs, so must he. Obviously, all of this is bad for the free worker. But... so what? What if we are amoral, and we want to be slavers? What if we want to be mob bosses? What if we want America to be a slave empire, built by slave workers and defended by slave soldiers? What if we want an entire world composed of 0.1% white and jewish slave owners, supported by a massive underclass of brown slaves? Sure, those pesky middle class libertarians would fuss, until we got rid of them, but wouldn't it all just work? Wouldn't it be awesome for the 0.1%? All we'd need to do is implement massive technological control programs over news and information to prevent those dumb brown slaves from revolting. And the Big Hand will never be short of an extra Matt Walsh to wield as a puppet. So this sounds awesome, right? Global slave empire, and if you object, you're a loser who gets money from doing work, instead of owning things, and you deserve to be a slave. Well... it sounds awesome until you crack a history or economics textbook. Slavery collapses economies. Collapsed economies collapse empires. You see, when you import slaves, and pay them slave wages, you are able to save money on labor, and produce goods and services more cheaply. That would be great for you... if the economy were a zero sum game. It's not. Because when you produce goods and services, you need someone to sell them to. Has everyone suddenly forgotten how a depression works? What is it that is depressed, in a depression? Wages, that's what. When wages are depressed, the people earning them spend less on goods and services. When they spend less on goods and services, producers of those goods and services must produce them more cheaply so they can sell. Which means they need to save on materials and labor. This drive wages down, both directly when companies cut labor costs, and indirectly when the companies that serve them with material goods need to produce those goods more cheaply. Which depresses spending even further. And then the government starts printing money, because impoverished slaves can't pay taxes. So now the money is worthless, too. That's what a depression is. It's a downward spiral. And slave labor is a fast track ticket to depression and economic collapse. Rome survived Carthage. Rome survived perpetual war. Rome survived rebellion, political coups, assassinations, chaos. Rome couldn't survive this. Neither can America. You cannot prosper alone. If you get rich by making others rich, you have allies. You have a system of mutual support. You have free market capitalism. If you get rich by making others poor, there will be no one to trade with. The most insidious part of this is that it's not a choice that individual business owners can make. Once the gates of slavery are open, and competitors in your industry begin to use slave labor, your only choice is either to be undercut and go bankrupt, or to follow suit and survive... until the economy collapses and everyone goes bankrupt. Whether it is importing foreign indentured servants, or exporting entire industries to places where workers are slaves, slavery has a gravitational force that pulls all economies to it, then gradually destroys them. Slavery anywhere is slavery everywhere. Steep tariffs on H1B and imported goods are not DEI for Americans, because Americans can compete with any workforce on the planet so long as those workers are free. Tariffs on imported workers, goods, and services, are incentive barricades against slavery. They are a temporary measure until we can eradicate slavery from the planet. Which we must do, or any advanced civilization, including America, will not survive. Some may not care if America survives, but you need to. It's where you keep all your stuff.
