Unbelievable. Melissa just surpassed Hurricane Katrina (2005) as the 7TH MOST INTENSE Atlantic Hurricane in recorded history, with her pressure now down to 901 MBAR. Her torrid eye is reaching unprecedented levels of dryness. -3.94 C at one point. The CDO is shuddering with subzero cloud tops extending more than 50,000 ft into the atmosphere. It is absolutely terrifying to think about the fact that Jamaica is just hours away from getting hit by this HISTORIC monster of a storm.

This powerful tropical cyclone is forecast to continue intensifying through the WNW track toward Taiwan, and likely will impact the Sakishima Islands of southern Japan by Friday morning. This island of Ishigaki is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen! We are not ruling out a detour back to Taiwan, but it appears Ishigaki is in the bulls eye of the track. I don’t understand in what world we’re living… or on what planet this could ever be normal. Just a few hours ago, everything was fine. I went out with Rafif and my wife—just a simple outing for Rafif, to lift her spirits and help her cope with her pain and exhaustion. But suddenly, in a single moment… everything changed. The bombing returned, and death returned to the streets of Gaza. This was a photo of Rafif as we were heading to the market… and shortly after, everything turned into fear and unimaginable terror.

With a marine and atmospheric environment as close to perfect as you can realistically get, Bavi is in a position to join the most elite class of earthly megastorms. LOOK AT THESE! You've probably never heard of "mesovortices," but the eyes of major/intensifying hurricanes, like Category 5 Melissa, actually contain addition, smaller whirls a few miles across. Mesovortices are a few miles across; they form as a way to balance an extreme discontinuity in angular momentum. In the buzzsaw-like eyewall – that ring of winds spiraling around the eye – there's an incredible amount of extreme wind and "angular momentum." But in the eye, there's hardly any – the air is calm. That means the eyewall "chafes" against the calm eye. Since the atmosphere is a fluid, that chafing pinches off into eddies and vortices. Think about when you're kayaking or canoeing through a pond. You might notice a few whirlpools shedding off your oar as the moving oar sweeps through the stationary water. A similar premise exists here. In this case, the atmosphere handles the transition from the eyewall to the eye by having some of the fluid "curl back" on itself, forming 4, 5 to 6 smaller "mesovortices." This eye exhibited a "wavenumber 5" pattern, meaning there were five mesovortices. The mesovortices often contort the inner edge of the eyewall into a wonky "sawtooth" pattern. A new study shows a thick ice cap in Greenland was completely ice-free just 7,000 years ago. The cap is Prudhoe Dome, which today is some 1,600 feet thick. The researchers drilled through the ice and dated the sediments below it. It turns out those sediments were once exposed to sunlight, meaning there was no ice. 7,000 years ago, summer temperatures were 3 to 5C warmer than today. This study shows, once again, that large ice losses have occurred in the recent past, caused entirely by natural climate variability - no CO2 forcing required.

This may not look much to you, but I’ve just got home to my narrowboat and this is the speed of the river now. I’m guessing five knots which is faster than my engine can do and the water level has risen about 18 inches in a few hours. I’ve put my pin in further and retied my stern. Here’s to hoping.

From December 27th, 2021. Pretty much all of us, myself included didn't even know Frazil Ice was a thing. But temperatures were well below -10°C in Squamish, BC. This led to unusual behavior at Shannon Falls. At the bottom, the river was still actively flowing, but it was super cooled to a below freezing temperature now. So wheb it tries to flow, it keeps building an ice layer underneath it. Get it going long enough, and enough force can have that below freezing liquid water flow on top of the ice. Well once that force runs out, the water path gets cutoff, and the flow suddenly stops. And I mean suddenly stops. You are watching a portion of a river stop flowing, and immediately freeze in seconds and disappear. To this day, this is still the most popular video I ever recorded with many thinking this was fake, or the video was reversed. No! This video is 100% authentic, you are just watching something super badass that you didn't know was real. Like I said, myself is included in that! #bcstorm
