NEWS: DeepMind teaches robots to play soccer. In a paper released today Google's DeepMind details how they used Deep Reinforcement Learning (Deep RL) to train low-cost, miniature humanoid robots in dynamic environments, allowing them to play a simplified one-versus-one (1v1) soccer game. The robots, equipped with 20 actuated joints, were initially trained in simulation using the MuJoCo physics engine. Through this training, they learned robust and dynamic movement skills like rapid fall recovery, walking, turning, and kicking. The robots seamlessly transitioned between these skills, even surpassing expectations, and developed a basic strategic understanding of the game. During matches, the trained robots demonstrated agile skills such as turning, kicking moving balls, and dynamic defensive blocking. They quickly combined these skills, showcasing their adaptability and outperforming scripted baselines. The robots walked faster, got up quicker, and kicked faster than their counterparts. I'm gonna say it hunters: Let's NOT have Artian weapons be the BEST weapons in Ascendance, at all. In fact let's make it so that they're no longer relevant beyond high rank! (Allow for the Artians we've created to be melded into upgrade materials.) Make Monster weapons the core of Monster Hunter again, by allowing us to re-roll the basic skills (such as attack boost and crit eye) and have them locked with their flavour skills such as: bladescale hone, whiteflame torrent, convert thunder element, etc. This way we can make all monster weapons effective and just pick the flavour skills to spice things up, sort of like how we had in Sunbreak where all weapons could be upgraded to a final tier in Master Rank. Sinoxolo Cakata, a project lead at the Sesi Fellowship and Skill Hub in South Africa, this program has been selected for the APGYD. As a participant in the 2023 World Youth Development Forum, she learned green agricultural skills in Xi'an during the forum and has since integrated these skills—along with new technology and entrepreneurial skills into the 6-month training programs for young women. She hopes that young people from different countries will come together as a community (rather than just a collective or forum) to share sustainable solutions to the various issues they face, especially amid the challenge of climate change.

Most motion papers tailor one controller to one specific task. This year at SIGGRAPH, our research team asks: can motor control itself be pretrained and reused? Generative Pretrained Controllers, or GPC, turn motor skills into a vocabulary of discrete tokens and train a transformer-based generative controller through next-token prediction. Just like GPT, the same pretrained controller can then be fine-tuned to solve new tasks. Trained on 600+ hours of motion, GPC runs in real-time inside a physics simulation, producing natural and physically grounded behaviors for interactive control.

Jim Schlossnagle and his Texas A&M Baseball team have identified a process to stay consistent, play one pitch at a time and focus on the controllables. The separator? They have stayed committed to their process. It is one thing to identify a process... It's another thing to execute it on a day-to-day basis regardless of what is happening. He mentions that the first thing they do at Texas A&M Baseball, at the start of fall is review the mental game and emphasize routines and the importance of playing one pitch at a time.
