We are used to seeing the 1920s in black and white. This is what London actually looked like, in full color, more than a hundred years ago. What you are watching comes from The Open Road, filmed in the summer of 1924 by a British cinematographer named Claude Friese-Greene. It is some of the earliest colour film of London ever made. What I love about this film is that the color collapses the distance between us and them. The black-and-white footage we are used to is beautiful, but it makes the past feel like another world. Colour changes that. Red buses, a blue sky, the green of the trees, and suddenly 1924 does not feel like history at all... What most people don't know is that this footage was one man's attempt to finish his father's life's work: Claude was the son of William Friese-Greene, one of the pioneers of early cinema. Together they had spent years developing a way to capture true color on film, using a system of spinning red and blue-green filters in front of the camera. The process was flawed. It flickered, it produced strange color fringes around anything that moved too fast, and it was soon overtaken by better systems and forgotten. Claude set out on a journey by car from Land's End to the north of Scotland, filming the whole country in his imperfect color, trying to prove that his father's dream could work. For decades the footage sat largely unseen, its flaws making it almost unwatchable. Then, in our own century, the British Film Institute used digital technology to clean away the flicker and the fringing, revealing what Friese-Greene had actually captured: a lost world, brought back to life in color.

I can tell almost instantly when I meet a young man or woman, whether he or she is a deep thinker. They may not be at the top of their class, but that doesn’t necessarily make them less intelligent than the kid who scored 1500 on his SAT or the guy with an IQ of 134. They may be more intelligent. Much more intelligent, but the methods we have for quantifying that intelligence do not adequately capture the breadth and depth of brilliant minds that exist in the world. So they go unrecognized while the kids who excel on answer-based examinations get the best grades, attend the best schools, earn the best degrees, and, more often than not, go on to have mediocre lives. Why? There is one thing that the most brilliant and accomplished people I have ever met all share in common, and it isn’t pedigree or IQ. It’s curiosity. And not just any curiosity—it’s the inexhaustible kind. It’s the kind that will never be satisfied. In my experience, this is the sort of curiosity that breeds humility and most often coincides with a questions-based mindset. And it’s this type of mindset, not the answers-based mindset our educational system selects for, that is the actual prerequisite for brilliance. I’ve seen this kind of brilliance in physical therapists, plumbers, and pretty much any profession you can imagine that we don’t typically associate with brilliance. But we do associate it with excellence. And that’s because to become excellent at something, you have to become your own teacher. This means going from learning how to give the right answers to learning how to ask the right questions. And that requires curiosity and an almost psychotic commitment to excellence. So, while the person in this video is correct that less intelligent people than he are far more successful than he has been, the more interesting and less remarked upon insight is that people like him are not as brilliant as the system tells us they are.

We believe we’re the first robotics company to demonstrate a robot peeling an apple with dual dexterous human-like hands. This breakthrough closes a key gap in robotics, achieving bimanual, contact-rich manipulation and moving far beyond the limits of simple grippers. 🧵↓ Today’s AI models (VLMs) are excellent at perception but struggle with action. Controlling high-degree-of-freedom hands for tasks like this is incredibly complex, and precise finger-level teleoperation is nearly impossible for humans. Our first step was a shared-autonomy system: rather than controlling every finger, the operator triggers pre-learned skills like a “rotate apple or tennis ball” primitive via a keyboard press or pedal. This makes scalable data collection and RL training possible. How does the AI manage this? We created "MoDE-VLA" (Mixture of Dexterous Experts). It fuses vision, language, force, and touch data by using a team of specialist "experts," making control in high-dimensional spaces stable and effective. Prototyped another iteration of a hand-tracking-based BoxelXR toolbar. This time, it's a circular menu spawned in front of a user once the index pinch is triggered. "In typical nanoporous materials, once the water enters the pores, it stays there," explains Patel. "But in our material, the water moves, first condensing inside the pores, then emerging onto the surface as droplets. That's never been seen before in a system like this, and at first we doubted our observations." A Material That Defies Physics Before they understood what was happening, the researchers first thought that water was simply condensing onto the surface of the material due to an artifact of their experimental setup, such as a temperature gradient in the lab. To rule that out, they increased the thickness of the material to see if the amount of water collected on the surface would change. "If what we were observing was due to surface condensation alone, the thickness of the material wouldn't change the amount of water present," explains Lee. But, the total amount of water collected increased as the film's thickness increased, proving that the water droplets forming on the surface came from inside the material. Even more surprising: the droplets didn't evaporate quickly, as thermodynamics would predict. "According to the curvature and size of the droplets, they should have been evaporating," says Patel. "But they were not; they remained stable for extended periods." With a material that could potentially defy the laws of physics on their hands, Lee and Patel sent their design off to a collaborator to see if their results were replicable. "We study porous films under a wide range of conditions, using subtle changes in light polarization to probe complex nanoscale phenomena," says Guldin. "But we've never seen anything like this. It's absolutely fascinating and will clearly spark new and exciting research." A Stabilized Cycle of Condensation and Release It turns out that they had created a material with just the right balance of water-attracting nanoparticles and water-repelling plastic -- polyethylene -- to create a nanoparticle film with this special property.
