For most orphans, it can take a while to play – and when they do, we know they've turned a corner in their recovery. Lemeki surprised us all, charging around from the minute she exited the rescue helicopter! Even the guineafowl couldn't escape her playful antics. This flock became her best friend and the feeling was mutual. When she changed stables, they relocated and came to roost on her roof! Her start was extraordinary: rescued as a week-old newborn in 2018 after she was spotted in the floodwaters of the Mara River. Today she is eight years old and one of the lead females of our Voi herd, edging closer to a wild life of her own. I genuinely cannot understand how someone can watch this story and still stand there, looking at two women, and somehow decide that the wrong one is the victim. On one side, you have a girl (Yıldız) who has been mistreated her entire life. Since the moment she was born, she was treated like a sacrifice for a conflict she was never even part of and later we find out that this conflict never even existed. Her right to study was taken from her. She was pushed into a marriage at a very young age just imagine being six, seven, eight years old, living in fear of being tied to someone you don’t even know. She was treated like a servant in her own home, by the very people she thought were her family. And just when she gets close to the happiness she dreamed of, the man she was engaged to shows up with another wife. She gets mistreated by that wife, by his family, and even (unintentionally) by him, because he was trying to run away from his own feelings, and that only caused her more heartbreak. The whole world was literally against her. She fought through all of that, only to find out in the end that everything she suffered for was based on something that wasn’t even real. Her entire life was built on a lie. That she isn’t even part of that family that she has literally no one in this world. Now on the other side… You have a girl (Melek) who, yes, was taken from her biological mother but she was raised by loving parents. She had everything anyone could wish for: education, freedom, a happy childhood, a healthy environment. She lived her life, fell in love, went out, made choices and no one questioned her, no one controlled her. And then what did she do? She found out that her man was engaged to another woman before marrying her (and even saw him marry her) and instead of holding on to her dignity, she chose to stay, to fight for a man who lied to her, to hold onto a marriage he tried to end multiple times. She used her unborn child to keep him tied to her. She lied constantly, and her excuse was that she was “protecting her marriage” a marriage that was already broken from the moment Serhat removed that ring at the airport in episode one. She tried to hand Yıldız (a woman who had already suffered enough) over to dangerous people. Then she found out the truth about her own birth (that her father ra*ped her mother.)And still no empathy. No moment of humanity toward her own mother. All she cared about was herself. And even though none of this had anything to do with Yıldız, she still found a way to blame it on her. Instead of holding her father accountable, she went and made a deal with him to get rid of Yıldız. She literally made a deal with the devil just to hurt Yıldız one more time. And after all of that… you want me to feel sorry for her? You want me to call her a victim? Peggy lived alone at the end of Hawthorn Lane, and the only one who really kept an eye on her was a big black Doberman named Bear. People in the neighborhood used to cross the street when they saw him. He looked like the kind of dog you read about in the wrong kind of story, all muscle and sharp ears. But anybody who actually knew Peggy knew that Bear followed her around the house like a shadow and slept on the floor beside her bed every night. Peggy was 79 and stubborn about living on her own. Her son had been after her for a year to move somewhere with people around, and she kept telling him she was fine, that she had Bear and that was plenty. One morning in the kitchen, she reached up for a mug on the top shelf and her legs just went out from under her. She came down hard on the tile and couldn't get herself back up. Her phone was on the counter, way out of reach, and the house was dead quiet except for her own breathing. Bear was at her side before she even finished falling. He nosed at her face and pressed against her, and when she told him to go, he ran to the front window and started barking, the deep kind the whole street could hear. He wouldn't stop, going from the window to Peggy and back again, over and over, until a neighbor two doors down finally came out to see what all the noise was about. She found Peggy on the floor and Bear standing guard over her, and she had the ambulance there within minutes. Peggy came home a week later with a cracked hip and a new respect for that dog. For instance, Lima Lima is loving but quite laidback with her son, Lenny. She gives him (and herself!) a long leash. Zongoloni takes a very different approach. She is hawkishly protective of Zigi and he, in turn, is like her little shadow. We can understand why Zongoloni keeps her family close: Rescued in 2013, she stands out as one of our most heartbreaking orphan cases. Her mother was shot by poachers and then left to an agonising, drawn-out demise. Zongoloni was just a baby at the time, yet she stayed by her mother’s side until the very end. Even for Kipekee, this is next level! Our small, spoiled girl crowns herself the princess of every corner she trundles into. Today, she decided to give herself a nice little throne atop Mzinga. Our nanny-with-a-heart-of-gold didn't even blink – she was just happy to have Kipekee time! Kipekee is the youngest in the Nairobi herd, which means she is rarely short of company. She arrived at our Nursery fragile, tiny and in need of round-the-clock care. The confidence she now shows is the result of months of patient, consistent support – from the Keepers who are with her every day, and our supporters who enable us to provide the care she needs. She was so incredibly shy, but the one thing that always gave away her beautiful spirit was her signature tippy-tap dance. Fast forward to today, and Bianca is thriving in the USA with her amazing family. She even got dressed up today all ready for Hawaii! Oh to see a dog go from the most heartbreaking beginnings to living a true dream life. 🥲

My husband and I adopted a 10.5 year old dog. Not because we were looking for another dog, but because she sat at the shelter for 3 months without a single person inquiring about her or meeting her and we didn’t want her dying alone. She wasn’t with a rescue but people in the rescue community were networking her because she was the sweetest and was every shelter volunteer’s favorite dog. They would even let her hang out in the office with them. I heard about her and the next day we went to meet her and adopted her. She was covered in ticks when we brought her home, and it took a lot of vet visits, treatments, trial and error, and patience to finally heal her from it. There were moments where it felt overwhelming, but she was worth every bit of effort. We weren’t sure how long she would live but we didn’t care, because it wasn’t about us, it was about her. Thankfully she was with us for three years and passed just two months ago at 13.5 years old, which is ancient. She was an amazing dog and I loved her just as much as all my other dogs. Seniors are the best and they’re just as deserving of a loving home as any other dog. 📹treatsnatcher

When we found her, her skin was badly infected, full of rashes and wounds caused by neglect and carelessness. She was in pain, but still wagged her tail still hoping for love. Today, Misty is healing beautifully under our care. She’s healthy, docile, playful, and incredibly affectionate the kind of dog who greets every visitor at our shelter with unconditional love and boundless trust. She gets along wonderfully with humans and other dogs alike. We are now searching for a loving family who can give Misty the forever home she deserves a home filled with care, warmth, and kindness. Throughout the process, I carried an overwhelming amount of grief for Grace. To find her emotional truth, I couldn’t begin with the cold composed woman you all saw. I had to begin with the 6 years old child.She had to completely unravel crying screaming and breaking apart before I could slowly bring her back down into Dynamic 1 which is the functional mask she wears every day. Underneath that mask, the little girl never left. She is still trapped in that morning. Still hearing the gunshot. Still watching her mother die before her very eyes. Still reaching for someone she could never save. Every glance came from that little girl…frozen in time When Grace pushes Henri’s body away…is it really Henri she’s pushing away? Or is she pushing away the pain that has haunted her for her entire life? When she tells Lom that love is stupid…is she really speaking to Lom? Henri? Or is she speaking across time to her mother and to that little girl who never understood why love had to cost so much? In her final moments, as her mother’s face flashed before her eyes, she realized she wasn’t so different from her mother after all. In her own broken, twisted way…she too had done everything in the name of love. Thank you for everything, Grace.
