The argument that “no other manager has reached two finals or done as well as Gareth Southgate since 1966” overlooks crucial context. It’s true that Southgate has taken England to finals and deep tournament runs, but the quality of opposition he’s faced pales in comparison to past eras. No other England manager has benefited from such favorable tournament draws, yet despite having perhaps the strongest squad in decades, Southgate has consistently failed against stronger teams. In every match where England faced elite opposition—be it Croatia in 2018, Italy in 2021, or France in 2022—Southgate’s tactical limitations were laid bare. The loss to Italy in the Euro 2021 final, played at Wembley, is a prime example. Even the Italians were surprised by how easily England handed them the initiative. Southgate’s overly cautious approach stifled the team’s attacking potential, costing England their best chance at a major trophy in decades. Similarly, the 2022 World Cup quarter-final exit to a beatable French side was another instance of underperformance. In contrast, managers like Bobby Robson, Terry Venables, and Sven-Göran Eriksson faced far tougher opposition in major tournaments. Eriksson’s England went toe-to-toe with footballing giants like Brazil and Portugal, while Southgate’s path to finals has been paved with weaker teams. The argument isn’t just about results—it’s about context. Southgate has had the easiest route to success, yet has failed to capitalize on it, often playing dull, uninspiring football. When judged by the standard of past England managers, Gareth Southgate doesn’t measure up. @CarltonPalmer

@CarltonPalmer “Should be knocking on the door of winning it” errrrr a semi final and 2 finals isn’t knocking on the door? Thicko.

@CarltonPalmer Not Southgate’s biggest fan, but bit rich coming from Carlton Palmer!!! 😂😂

@CarltonPalmer We are knocking on the door…two finals, a semi and quarter final… in last 4 tournaments

@CarltonPalmer Kept it 💯😂

@CarltonPalmer So Palmer never actually watched premier league football in the mid to late 90s then seeing as he's baffled at Southgate getting 70 caps whilst being one of the best English CBs of that era whilst playing for Villa who were in Europe most years.

@CarltonPalmer "should be knocking on the door of winning it". If 2 finals and a semi-final isn't knocking on the door then what is?

Incredible how we Muslims have been so accustomed to western values after years of mixing and seeing haram in front of our eyes that our hearts fail to reject it anymore. F words. Promoting adultery bragging about sins and the jealousy towards the females in the family is almost non existent. Sorry bro. I had to address this after hear the clip. What Palmer is eluding to with regards to Southgate is correct in my view. It’s the way he put it forward which is totally unacceptable in the sight of Allah thus we should reject it. We don’t anymore, not even in our hearts. I pray we wake up.

@CarltonPalmer As a few of us know, CP is spot on. GS did some things well but really was a coward when he needed to be brave. Good riddance

@CarltonPalmer Palmer is the right in terms of Southgate had a weakness for changing tactics in the fly. However he is dismissing the job Southgate did to create a harmony and structure that allowed the England players to perform together. We’ve seen better squads crumble due to camp splits.
