They definitely are! Kindergarten became the new first grade & they want 4yos in preschool to start getting ready for kindergarten... It's out of control.

100% AND they expect kiddos to be able to fully ready at the end of K. If you must send your kiddos to school wait a year at least

My oldest is 30 and youngest is13. They both had to know how to hold a pencil & write their name, know colors, use scissors, count to 10, stand in line and sit in one spot on floor. These have always been requirements needed to enter K

I’m a great advocate of partial homeschooling: even if your child goes to public school, you have a responsibility to teach them many things at home, bc the school won’t do it. It’s not negotiable, if you want your child to thrive.

Kudos to this lady for speaking about this. Yes a five year old should know how to write his or her name, at least count to 20, say the Our Father prayer, know ABC’s, birthday, colors, parents & grandparents name and their address. These are the basics. Godspeed to all educators.

why are people in these replies calling it “partial homeschooling”….you mean RAISING your kid?

1. I’m a HUGE proponent of parents being involved in their kids education. I have homeschooled all 4 of my kids and see parents as the primary teacher 2. Give me a break here. Kindergarten is supposed to be the first step in a child’s formal education, not a “continuation “ of their education. Maybe we need to not expect so stinkin much from 5 year olds. At that age, there will be a wide range of ability. 3. A kindergartener should know how to listen and follow instructions. As long as that basic discipline is in place, there is zero good reason a kindergarten can’t teach all that is needed.

As a K teacher, I really don’t care if they come without those academic skills. I care way more if they can’t hear the word “no”, wait their turn, share, follow basic multi-step directions, persevere through a challenge, and don’t think the entire universe revolves around them.

my daughter was on 2nd grade level so can’t relate. gave her writing books at 3.

A parent is a child’s first teacher! She is absolutely correct! Children also need to be taught at home: use of bathroom independently, manners, dress themselves, listen, follow directions, taking turns, sharing, and most importantly, respect for everyone and everything!

I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to teach kids letter sounds and basic decoding. Teachers getting online confessing that they are ill equipped to teach kids basic foundational skills is a self own.😂😂😂 In the time she took to record this video she could have researched a strategy that would help her learn how to teach foundational skills.

When I was in kindergarten we had letter of the week. Yes, only one letter. Imagine. Each week was spent on a different letter of the alphabet. Numbers? I’m sure we covered them. Point being. It was slow and intentional. Songs were song and main priority was to play and be kind.

When I went to Kindergarten it was all fingerpaints, blocks and recess. Yet we graduated from High School reading at grade level. Oh and no homework was given until 4th grade. Hmm.

My son started kindergarten and can count to 100. The other kids are barely counting to 10 and hes helping. 🙃🙃 wtf.

Maybe they should focus more on math, reading, and writing instead of ethnic studies and other politics that no kindergarten kid should be involved in or care about? (This is Minnesota kindergarten curriculum btw)

Children SHOULD know phonemes and basic numerecy as early as possible. Children should * not* be competent to write or recite ANY of this before afe 6, probably 7.

Easy to blame parents, harder to look at the system. In the United States some parents are back at work within weeks, juggling multiple jobs just to stay afloat. That’s not neglect, that’s reality.

Ummm in the 60’s a teacher taught all of those things. And it was no problem. Now kindergarten is more like first grade.

Kids learn by play. There has to be a certain level of brain development to write. Teachers don't know anything about brain development. Teachers are the ones behind in learning.

Your expectations are too high. Children used to learn colors, identifying letter and numbers, and spelling their name in K. Now you want them to know phonics? Childhood development doesn’t speed up just because you want them to excel on state testing.

What is the point of school? If we are going to teach our children academics, then why would we then turn them over to educators who believe they have the same or more rights than parents over our children?

GenX here. We didn’t have iPhones,internet or tablets. Yet somehow,even with both parents working, and with the help of Sesame Street, The Electric Company, Mr. Rogers and Zoom, I was able to read at college level in grammar school. WTF happened in just one generation to America?

We start kids earlier and earlier yet kids are not getting smarter.I saw a preschool that had 2 year olds reading 100 words off flash cards.I know quite few of those who didn’t make it out of should be learning through play.

100% most parents need to parent more, no doubt about it. But you can't be behind in K. You just can't. Your biggest job as a teacher is to make sure they don't eat too much paint or dirt. There are 0 academics needing to be measured at that age. They'll learn what's necessary

Sounds like these people have lost their damn minds and don't know what kindergarten is. The whole *purpose* of kindergarten was to teach children how to go to school. How to line up, follow directions, do what the teacher says.

I’m teaching my 3 year old how to read and write now. He can already spell his name, other words and count to 20. I however, do not think if a child doesn’t know how to write at 5 that’s a parent fail, these are things they will be learning through 2nd grade.

Learning should start at home. Reading to your kids, teaching them numbers and colors.

I could read write and do basic math before I started Kindergarden. About half of the class could. We basically had to 'hurry up and wait' instead of any kind of learning while the other half of the class caught up. I bet it's worse now.
