Ted Chiang's essay made some good points about art and intentionality, but it is premature to debate about AI making art. For now, AI doesn't exist autonomously. Humans make art with AI models trained on humans. We train our own models on our own datasets. This project took 18...

Holly, you are great! I always give your datasets as great answer to all this "stealing of artists" nonsense. I would love if those models would be available - or if we would be able to train models on our datasets. I do it btw - training LLM on my essays and GAN on my photos.

How do you feel about your work (like the recently released Infinite Images) that was not trained on your own models using your own dataset but rather the original DALL-E model (that’s my understanding based on public comments)?

using someone else's model is a new form of collaboration. For example if someone uses Holly+ or xhairymutantx, the generations contain traces of us both. You can use someone else's model to make art, but there are different levels of intentionality. Some people prompt like archaeologists, others prompt like models are a vending machine. All of it is art.

I’ve studied far too much art history to ever propose a definition of art, but intentionality certainly seems central. Nature produces beautiful patterns & designs, but we wouldn’t call it art. “Humans make art with AI models trained on humans.” 🙏🏼 Precisely why consent matters.
